I have a black P bass USA body that suffered a small crack on the treble side neck pocket edge. The dreaded crack. I'm having it fixed by my great guitar painter friend. The thing is that I'd like to figure out with the help of you basspicianados as to what color to have it painted. Please tell me what color you think goes best with a rosewood fretboard.
The first two that come to mind are black and regular sunburst- so I have that but I could use a few or more ideas. I want to get it done now that the weather is pretty stable.(not Winter) Thanks--

I don't know. Unless you're totally against something more out there I think Linnin may be onto something. If you're going to refinish a body. Why not do something a bit out of the ordinary? Like maybe one of the old school custom colors, even?

Burgundy Mist Metallic, Inca Silver, Shoreline Gold, CAR, Charcoal Frost Metallic are all cool colors and look good with a rosewood board. Personally, I've always dug Charcoal Frost Metallic. It's very subtle, but really rich when you're up on it.

As far as what finish I think goes best with Rosewood? I don't really know. I'm a maple guy, and I generally think both the fretboard wood and the actual model of the instrument matters when it comes to what looks best. (ie: what I like on a Tele doesn't necessarily translate to a Jag and vice versa) Hmmmm... I generally like the fancier finishes on J's and the more tans and solid pastels on P's. However, something about Blue Ice Metallic grabs my eye everytime I see it. No matter what instrument it's on.

Okay, not you get to hear from the boring old guy.

HA! I just heard all my forum mates take a deep breath and shake their heads. Affprod is going to suggest a true color for the year it was made, or something even more boring like Daphne Blue, Surf Green, or Shell Pink, or perhaps the mod years like the metallic finishes in Burgundy Mist, Ice White, Gun Metal Blue or Candy Green.

But the truth of the matter is, a refinish is a refinish. There is no difference in a period correct color or the linnin special, when it comes to value. So have at it, do something that you would like, something unique. I once considered having a local artist paint a body.

OR, you could be like this old man and keep it period correct.

Neither is worth more than the other, or ever will be. Do what makes you feel good every time you pick it up. I do period correct finishes because it is what I enjoy, but they hold no more value that a reverse purple sunburst with chartreuse and blaze orange accents.
A refinish is a refinish.

Yawn. Another ho-hum boring Precision. After all it is "just a hammer". Move along. Nothing to see here, folks.

Another boring guy here.... love Olympic white (yellowed a bit if possible) with tort guard/rosewood is an awesome look. Also love a faded Fiesta Red (salmon pink-ish).
...Just love classic colors combined with a tort guard.

+1

Nothing wrong with hot-buttered Oly White or faded FRED. Dakota Red is another option that works well with a tortoise-shell pickguard and is somewhat rarer than either.

I do dig Candy Apple red-- even Fiesta red- with tort guard those look good. Hmmmmm.......The yellowed OLY WHT is a good thought too. Some white with raw sienna and cadmium yellow should do the trick for that color-- maybe a touch of black in there too- (ever so little).
