I recently retired after 35 years of Nursing and decided to seek the Love I left behind for "a real job", Music. In 1974, I purchased a beautiful Mighty Mite P Bass copy (Koa body, J bass neck, all brass hardware, P&J pickups, pick it today ,still humming tomorrow beauty). Great work horse thru the years. U[pn retiring, I decided to reward myself for a career done well and purchase a beautiful MIM P Bass Special Deluxe Series Bass. Beautiful to look at, beautiful to hear, beautiful to play. I treated it like the beautiful Princess she was. She lay quietly in her case in my studio room for about a year while I studied guitar, coming out to play every once in a while so I could feel her and hear her beautiful voice.

I pulled her out to play the other day and to my horror, there was a crack in her finish right where the seam would be on her lower bout where the glue seam would be in her body. Before purchase, I was steadfastly assure by the retailer that "the work that is coming out of the new factory in Mexico is spot on" with Fender American made guitars.

In my years of love for fender products, I have never seen this happen to an American made guitar. Anybody else seen this travesty on their MIM axes? Any recourse from Fender?

Never heard of that, but that's pretty crazy.

Humidity changes can reek havoc on all guitars.

You sad that you left it in its case for a year. I don't know where you live, but in my area,
the relative humidity can vary by 50% over the course of 6 months.
That's enough to re-tune your bass and certainly it can add to finish cracks since the wood will swell if it has enough moisture close by to absorb.

In the Summer time you should probably run a de-humidifier on the same floor as you keep your bass. That will reduce the drastic changes from the added humidity.

Thanx for the reply. You know that was my first thought too, but I live in Bakersfield where the humidity is low (generally) and the high summer temps keep the a/c humming, and I have a dehumidifier in the room for that very purpose. Since buying it, the winters have been almost moisture free (CA drought and all). So idk maybe I suppose, but all my other axes have fared perfectly well. Thx again for the idea though. It was my first thought also. Fender has a lifetime warranty against manufacture defects, I think I'll show it to them and see what happens.

Play well!

I've never.......ever seen a Fender body crack apart at the glue seem, online or in person. Jaco broke the Bass Of Doom into fragments in a fit, that's about it.

I think the warranty claim should be pursued.

Yes that is quite an uncommon problem. Sounds like some kind of Friday afternoon QC going on down there. Maybe not enough glue and combined with a weather change (as little as it may seem--I know your climate) and that's all it took. Really inexcusable and something thatshould NEVER happen. Let Fender know ASAP.
