A friend of mine and I bought new American Standards a month ago from 2 different stores. He sent his back and got a replacement as it would make a scratchy sound so bad you could not play it once in a while. I have noticed that mine has started making teh same sound and if I wiggle the cable at teh input jack it will go away for a while. Could there be a batch with bad jacks? If so, as I love the bass, should I just repoace the jack? I hav etried different cords, etc. I use the new Fender Platinum cord primarily.

If you haven't already, try tightening down the nut on the jack. If a jack starts rattling around it can cause some grounding issues. Sometimes that's all it is, and that's something that can loosen in transit. If that doesn't work, it's still likely a simple fix, but given that we're talking a serious bass here, I'd say take it back. Likely it's nothing, and the shop will fix it up for you, but Fender is great about backing their product so you don't have to worry about it.

Remember, most problems you face with any instrument can be handled by a professional technician. Look up Fender's licensed repair shop list on this website and find the nearest one by you, and take it in for a tune-up. They can do more for your bass than fix a faulty input jack. Get the neck and bridge set up while you're at it and you'll be in the green for some time to come.

If you just return it to get another one, you're just getting the same deal with the same so-so Fender factory setup and a slight possibility of more troubles with a crackly input jack in the future.

I've got to agree with the rest here, it's a quick fix. It's unfortunate that you've had the bad luck to have problems but, it'll all work out.

I took the pickguard off and the jack is being pinched by the cavity and grounding. I was able to move it around a bit to get some clearance and teh noise is gone. I would say that the cavity should be routed out 1/8" or so more as it is jus too tight a space considering the quality of componentry. As they are dealing with wood and somewhat old school pots and wiring they should do a better job.

Unbelievable, for how much you paid, you would expect better craftsmanship.

Hope the problems are gone forever.
