They are very close is quality to the Heartfield and use some of the same components, but it is a different instrument from any Heartfield. Fujigen's Matsumoto plant made all the Heartfield basses and also made the Fender P-Bass Lyte models. In fact Fujigen made practically all Heartfield and Fender Japan instruments even when Dyna was making Strats and Teles during the Fujigen Matsumoto expansion project that shut down Spanish electric production entirely. This was the point at which "Made In Japan" became "Crafted In Japan." There were several Lyte versions including a Standard with chromed hardware and a Deluxe with gold hardware and a better bridge. Various body woods were used depending on year and finish and version. 2000 was the last year for the Japan made Lyte and in 2001 production of the same basic model moved to the USA and Mexico renamed the ZONE and given some upgrades including an 18v preamp and USA made pickups on the USA Deluxe Series version. The Mexican made Zones retained the 9v preamp from the Lyte and included a five string model very rarely seen anymore.

It is my opinion that the reasons the Lyte's values are so low have nothing to do with the quality of the instrument. It really is a great instrument and along with the Fender JP-90 two of the biggest bargains around on a used Fender Bass. Both the Lyte and the JP-90 really should sell for more than they do. Both are unique and unlike any other Fender bass. I really like both but don't currently have either. If I could find a clean white JP-90 or Fender Lyte Standard then I'd be tempted just because they are both huge bargains in the used market.

No! Don't Do It!

Forum member CPL hasn't been around here in a while, but he has one, and has had quite a bit of trouble with it. Hard time getting any kind of decent Fender tone out of it.

If he reads this I'm sure he'll tell you all about it.

Well, I suppose this is good as any to jump in back here after being gone for many moons. I deleted my account here after being fed up with a few things, but no point in dwelling in negativity, especially when you can add it to your foe's list and not look at it. :P

Anyway, back to the subject at hand, I had to retire the bass because it developed a short in it. I actually got great tones out of it and it served me well for 10 years or so. The problem that I had with it was the finish cracking off. In fact, this was something I was talking about a long time ago when I started posted over at The Conservatory! forum, were I've been hanging out since I left here along with a few individuals who I'm sure probably still pop in here from time to time,) and a subject I'd thought about using to come back here with, since it is Fender related.

I now have pics of my gear, which I didn't in the past, so I have pics of the P Lyte that you can probably see what happened to it. It started around 2005 when I played a gig in NYC and just began to crack and fall off. It was weird since I never had that happen to me with any other instrument before. I remember some guy in a music shop say something about the paint jobs during that time period (it's a 1994 model) might have been defective, but who knows? I might have even originally mentioned something about it here as CPL, but that was a long time ago and I had no pics to start any real discussion about it.

Here is a pic of it:

Hi Folks,

I've been reading your posts in this topic with a lot of interest.
I came here by a Google search for finding more info on the Fender p-bass Lyte.
I'm actually interested in looking for one to buy!

But the problem here (I live in Belgium) is that they are very hard to find. And of course, before to buy one, I would like to try one out, preferably on my gear. I've been looking on eBay also, but not much for sale out there either. Have they become rare?

Can anyone advice me on where to find them?

Thx a lot in advance!

Cheers, Bernie

I've seen a few here and there on eBay over the years, but that's in the US, so not too sure of the rarity, or how many were available in Europe. The one I have was bought new and had ever since.

I always liked the look of the Lyte & unlike a few of the designs, from the 80's one that still looks good today 8) .

It also has a really fast neck on it. I'm thinking about swapping out to lighter gauge strings on it like I did the Squier Jazz Bass. I think that will help with the action a bit more. It certainly did on the Squier. I also need to figure out what's up with the electronics. There is some sort of short going on. That bass has had some heavy use, especially the past 12 years, so things do happen.
