So I have the opportunity to buy an active Fender prec Lyte MiJ 89-90 for about 450 euroes.

1: is it worth it?
2: what can it do my RW sig and dean metalman can not?
3: what kind of issues can I expect with this bass?

No! Don't Do It!

Forum member CPL hasn't been around here in a while, but he has one, and has had quite a bit of trouble with it. Hard time getting any kind of decent Fender tone out of it.

If he reads this I'm sure he'll tell you all about it.

In my area of SW Florida, these sell around $350 USD, which is about 20% less than current value. They are not uncommon. Not sure about your neighborhood, but with Euros going for 1.36:1 you're over $600 USD.

Again, not familiar with your market, but here that would be way high.

Its very hard to judge prices in other countries from our perspective of Fender used pricing here in the USA.

If you feel its a good deal judging from what they go for in stores or the internet in your country, then go for it.

I have never heard anything negative about Precision Lyte basses. I think they are great basses, light weight and perfect for a lot of guitar players who may occasionally need to play bass.

If somebody has had a negative experience with these basses- lets hear about it.

Well... I picked it up for 400. No regrets.
The higher tones really have a pop to em.

Glad you went that route. I have owned one but was unable to chime in earlier.

If you are looking for a "traditional" fender tone, then no, this bass isn't that bass. What the Lyte is, is an inexpensive, quality alternative to the wash of P/J style basses that began emerging in the mid-to-late 1980's and early 90's. The quality is great, the sound is solid and deep, but with that distinct PJ growl. The body is light, so that is nice for long gigs and/or multiple show dates.

My only beef with the bass, and this is something that can be changed, is that they didn't have a battery door, since they are active basses. You would have to take off the control cavity plate to replace the battery. Again, not a big deal, certainly not a deal-breaker, but it would have been a nice convenience.

Enjoy that bass!

Underrated and under priced. There are just so many of them out there and they are non-traditional Fenders so the value stays low. They are great instruments! They aren't a Jazz or a Precision but different. They are really one of the nicest non-Heartfield basses out of Fujigen Gakki. The craftsmanship is fantastic and in very uncharacteristic fashion for a Fender Japan instrument, the electronics are stone cold solid! I'd have no problem gigging one stock. Congrats! Nice find!

Thanks all.
It has a fink dinks and scratches, but that comes with age. Plus I don't think that it's really... easy... to refin that dark metallic green with brass-ish accents. Plus refinning it would be the same to be as buying a fabricated road worn bass (no hate to the people that bought the 50s road worn prec). I believe signs of aging are signs of an instrument being used properly.

Didn't Leo make some comparisson about a guitar being a hammer meant to be used? Can't remember the exact lines...

One thing I do note, eventhough my roger waters prec is my main instrument, I still have trouble adjusting to one of them when I've been playing on the other (and this becomes even a greater problem when I take my Dean Metalman Z into the equasion. Good thing that one is momentarily out of order due to this decoration project I got in my mind that I finally want to complete now).

Still have to post pictures.

I'm pretty sure Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde used to play one back in the day. She always had good tone. P/J's aren't my bag, but some of my favorite bassists have used them. Johnette and Duff to name a couple. A good tool to have in the box, I imagine.

I just pickep up a Precision Lyte (1988-1989).

Like Brotherdave described, it is great!

Can someone tell me what the official name of the color is?

It's black/grey metallic.

Could it be Mystic black?

This picture I found on the internet of a similar bass.

According to a parts list that I found on Brotherdave's website, the color is Montego Black.

I also found a Japanse catalogue from 1989.

The catalogue tells the body is made of Indonesian camp? Could that be wood of a Indonesian camphor tree?

On "Alibaba" I found this about Indonesian camphor wood:

We use Indonesia camphor wood for this bench.
The advantage of Indonesia camphor wood:
1. Owning gloss of natural material, new section has intense camphor odour
2. straight texture, heavy and hard quality, high intensity, medium air shrinkage
3. handling ease, smooth section
4. easy sawing, favorable polishing performance

I played one at a time when my main bass was an Ibanez SoundGear, forget which model but a PJ. Really liked the tone of the Lyte because it wasn't as muddy sounding as my Ibanez. It rang through nice and clear. The weight was kind of comparable. In the ballpark anyway. Can't really compare the necks. Different animals.

Great basses, my first Fender bass, and I loved it, the pre-amps are prone to crackle these days, but lightweight and a nice punch, glad you went for one, I have owned three and rate them, rock on bud.

If these are even close to the Heartfield DR or Prophecy series, they would be very nice. I have never had the pleasure to play one, but the Heartfield basses have never disappointed.

Nice connect. That didn't spring to mind.
