I've had my eye on this bass for some time now, and the price still hasn't dropped below the $3999 mark. It's also listed on eBay. I've seen several used ones come and go for around the 2500 dollar mark, but never with this color combo (sunburst with rosewood in the NOS finish).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sV6nzDaPsA

Does anyone know if this is a more rare combo, or should I be patient (even though it has been several months and I've never seen another one like it...) I probably could get it for a little less, but I doubt much less than $3500. Not sure how good the resale would be on this thing either... not that I plan on selling it any time soon, but it's nice to know you've got something that will hold it's value - especially when you've paid that much!

Please stop me from spending!

Hey! I am actually in the process of fighting with the Custom Shop on getting a quote for a 55 Precision. (yes, apparently you need to fight with them to take your money) It's been such a miserable process that I too have been hunting the used market.

Okay, 55 Precisions never came with Rosewood necks. So the models you see at CBC are certainly special it the regard that they purposely ordered them with non-vintage correct specs in regards to the finish and rosewood board. However, that isn't a bad thing. Just what it is, and if you like rosewood fretboards this is a great thing!

55 P's usually go for around 2500 used, and 4000-4500 new for teambuilt models. 7-8k for new masterbuilt models, and 4-5k used. There are two 55 Precisions on ebay right now that I am sorely tempted to drop the hammer on. Recently I let an older shell pink one slide by that actually had the pups replaced with Fender CS Abby handwounds. I honestly didn't know if I could pull off a pink bass at my age. However, I have been kicking myself since.

In the end, If you want a single coil Fender Precision with a rosewood board then these are the go to basses, imo. The likelihood of stumbling across a model like that randomly is pretty unlikely. Normally for something like that you'd probably have to order a "one off". Which depending on the options can run you 4-5k for a team built model.

These basses hold their value very well considering. Listening to the clip, the rosewood board brings a much different voice out of the bass than the traditional one piece maple. Which makes it cool and interesting. 4-4.5k is standard going rate for these new so 3900 is a fair asking price on the dealer's part. In my opinion, If this has the combination of features you want (rosewood board, burst and vintage specs) and you can get it for 3500 I'd say you would be making a good deal. It's certainly a fair price.

These do retain their value fairly well. As you've seen used it should bring about 2500 used. However, it's lack of vintage correct neck might be either a selling point, or a hindrance. However, I wouldn't even worry about that. When spending this kind of money you should get what makes you happy. Given what you've said you were looking for this bass seems to be "made for you". I'd say go ahead and see if they'll make the 3500 deal. If they don't budge. Say you are willing to deal TODAY. Still don't budge? Leave your number and walk away. I have to be honest. I think they'll take the deal.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

Kingofpain - WELL SAID, and thanks for the words of wisdom. I'm surprised to hear there is a noticeable difference in the tone of the board. Having never played a 55, I can only go by what I can read and hear on the internet (which can be deceiving).

It looks like if I really want this combo, this would have to be the one I shoot for. Although you have me wondering if the rosewood is going to be a plus or a detriment value wise.

Don't kick yourself too much for letting the shell pink bass slip by. I agree - pulling that off would really be a challenge for almost anyone. And good luck in your dealings with Fender Custom Shop.

Thanks again for the advice!

I wouldn't worry about the value. If you dig rosewood boards, and the look of it. Dig the specs on the bass, and like what you hear on the video then what does it matter? A bass is just a tool. A really awesome one, but in the end it's a tool that allows you to create and communicate. If you dig it, and you have the means. Go for it, I say. Keep us posted here on your search.

Just a thought about the rosewood board not being original.... wouldn't the same apply to the shell pink? And the same for the orange and turquoise 55's on Sweetwater?

Absolutely. Things like that are only the concern of purists. Not that there may not have been custom colored 55 Precisions. It was an option, but one that probably wasn't taken or if it was it was literally done on less than a handful of basses. So there are all sorts of things that go into vintage correct. If you want a true vintage correct 55 Reissue then it's blonde or burst with a maple board. However, at the price you are paying why not get a great "what if?" bass? Colors are incidental, and I'm a firm believer that if it's nitro that's vintage correct enough for me. The neck? I just like maple necks which is why I am drawn to the 50's P's. This bass is the PERFECT bass for guys who may dig the darker, smokier sound of the 59 or early 60's P basses but with the sweet smoothness of the single coil. If you're paying that kind of money. You should get EXACTLY what you want. Lucky for you. Some shop ordered it and saved you some cash by having it in stock. Like I said, the chances of running into that combo randomly is slim because you actually have to order it that way special. I don't know your finances, but just from what you've said about what you are looking for in a bass. This seems like kismet to me.

Thanks again for the explanation. I am ashamed to admit I had to look up the word kismet!

I know it's probably not what you're looking for, but Rumbleseat has this CS 55 for a pretty good price.. just in case you're interested!

I did see that! That is certainly a nice price, and it looks amazing. I'm definitely more partial to white blonde than burst, but my girl keeps telling me to get a custom color. She says I don't need two white blonde basses. (which is simply madness  ) She also says that if I'm paying that much I should get something a little special instead of the standard. Something that makes it more unique. More "mine".

Eh, I don't know. If it wasn't for her I'd probably already have a used one. Though, I do have to say there is some logic to her thinking. Which is why I was pursuing the one off custom shop angle.

In the end the bass I'm looking to order is just a slab body 55 with the tummy and forearm cut only, and a fancy nitro trans finish. I've been thinking Bing Cherry Trans, Crimson Trans, or possibly Sunset or Gretsch Orange Trans. Maybe even Black Cherry Burst. Too many gorgeous choices to only get one swing at it, right?

I have to say I'm lucky that my girl is so supportive. I turn 40 this year and she told me I deserve to get one made the way I want.

Well don't feel bad, I have few years on you! But after hearing your girl's thoughts, I totally agree with her. I already have an all original burst 66 P-bass with rosewood, and the reason I want to 55 is because I want something I don't have to worry so much... but I love burst, and I'd have two pretty valuable basses that looked almost identical?!?! Crazy indeed.

In your case, definitely get EXACTLY what you want. There is probably no better feeling than getting something totally custom that doesn't exist elsewhere. This will be your custom tool that you can grow old with.

Call Fender back right now and insist they get moving on it. Keep us posted.

I've been going back and forth with this bass, and I finally went to "my guy" at Sweetwater and he offered to give me the same exact bass for $3600 with a 3-5 month lead-time. The main reason I would go this route is because I try to stay loyal to them whenever I can, plus I have interest free financing for 24 months...

Now here's the question - I want the exact same bass as this:

http://www.bassclubchicago.com/product_ ... bstbrn.htm

Fender Custom Shop 55 Precision in Brown Burst NOS finish, 2 Piece Ash Body, Nitro Body & Neck, 55 P-Bass Pickup, Quarter Sawn Neck, Contoured Body, Tele-style Headstock, Vintage Fretwire, 20 frets, 7.25" fingerboard radius, 50's Soft "V" neck shape, 1.7" nut width, 4 Bolt Neck, and 3 piece black pickguard.

BUT now that I have the option, I will probably go for the hand wound pick ups and sort for lightweight wood.

Considering the rosewood fretboard isn't original anyway, should I go with ebony?

According to my girlfriend you should. I'd listen to her. If you're going to order a bass and have it built for you. Then get what you want. Pull out all the stops. Most of us only get to do this once, if at all. Don't leave anything on the table.
