To me I think the J pup was really just put in there to thin out the humbucker. Which, depending on your preferences it can need it. It is a VERY powerful, very dark pick up.

Personally, as I said above. If I was to design this circuit I'd keep the 3 position switch and sub a Single Coil P pup for the J pup. That way the bass is all balls. Also, I'd probably want to put in a stack knob configuration that way you get independent tone and volume. To me that would be the IDEAL.

However, if more oomph is what you're after on the J pup as this bass has already been routed for the J pup. Why not put in an SD 1/4lb J for the extra beefy tone?

Personally, I would do that and then see if you really want the independent controls. I think it's always best to have them, but everyone is different. Do the stack knob if you want it at that point. That way you keep the look of the bass intact. Because it is a gorgeous looking bass. You can usually find 1/4lbs for a decent price and pick up swaps are simple.

I agree that the Jazz pup was there to compliment. As I mentioned, the Seymour Designed pickup isn't as strong as an SPB-3. Swapped my Precision's original foe an SPB-3, it'a a beast, the closest thing to a Humbucker that I've heard. it isn't in the same class but it's a killer.

the pups on my fender Jazz are a lot more powerful, I'm thinking, Fender Jazz Replacement. Stacked knobs sound like a winner, would make life easier.

Which pots? 250 0r 500?

Personally, I would do the stacked knobs and do 500k on the bucker. (which it hopefully should be if not 1 meg. However, if it's not that would explain why it's so dark) Then I would do 250k on the J pup. That's just me, though.

If you are happy with the bucker, or it's already got a 500k and you like your J tone bright. (which in this case it might need to be) Then the 500k might be in order. I think it's going to come down to how much you want to be able to "cut" through with the J pup to thin out the bucker. If you are looking to add beef then I'd go with the 250k. Again, just me.

I'm generally a one pick up, P bass kind of guy. So guys like Brother Dave and the like might be better to chime in here. The mixing of different kinds of Fender bass pups is always interesting. If you do decide to do the mods I hope you document it and keep us all in the loop with pics and samples. This bass is definitely one of the coolest numbers Fender has done in a long while. Good luck!

Thanks King, the SPB-3 pup is just the regular replacement that they offer.

As far as evening out the sound, I really don't think that there is a pup that will match up. The Humbucker is unique in its sound, I've never used it to it's maximum output as I want my speakers to work for a while longer, and if it's through the headphones, I want to be able to hear.

I've always been a firm believer in having more and not having to use it. This pretty much sums up the Humbucker. It does have "Fender" stamped on the cover, wonder if it's a real one.

I don't think that Fender makes these to true 70's specs anymore in terms of materials. I don't think that they can. Whether for regulatory, or simple scarcity issues. However, as far as I know these are legit Fender pick ups. Where they are made, I do not know, but I know the one that was in the Squier Precision TB was an absolute animal and that bass, the one you own and the Modern Player Telecaster basses all probably use the same pick up. (It's a specialized enough pup that I doubt they make multiple models of it) The modern player Tele Basses look awesome to me. I was really miffed when I found out they had modern neck specs. Had they had the same neck as the old CIJ 51 and Sting basses I would own one now. Still, the tone on those pick ups and the output is staggering. Every one I've played made me wish they strung them with flats though. I bet they'd sound killer with flats picked. Like that old school country "tic tac" sound. Even with the rounds you can nail that old school New York Dolls Killer Kane tone straight out the box. Good stuff.

Man, I wish these came with a full scale vintage spec neck. I had been debating about ordering a Single Coil Precision from the Custom Shop. Everytime I look at this beauty my mind starts to wander into Masterbuilt Territory. Like why not build a "Fender 70's Telecaster Bass Deluxe"? With the Big Bucker in the neck, and the 51 Single Coil P pup in the bridge? Switching, maybe stack knobs, bound and blocked black maple neck... Agh! Gotta stop!

All madness aside, She is seriously awesome. I'd love to hear some samples of what you can do with that pick up configuration. Seems like one of the smartest ones Fender has put out bass wise in a loooooonnnggg time. I remember trying one of the Squier Precision Bass TB's (Basically a 70's Telecaster Bass II RI) back before they discontinued them. I was super impressed with the build quality for the money. (I think it was on clearance for 199, and I still kick myself for passing on it) The only draw back to the single bucker in the neck was that it was DARK, even with the highs all the way rolled in. I bet that single coil in the bridge does wonders for it.

Enjoy, man! That is one of the coolest basses Fender has done, imo.

rondo music / SX / Douglas makes a 51 style p-clone for $140 (sunburst w/ black guard). you could prob have a PU upgrade and some shielding in there for less than the price of a CV/VM :P

Thanks, when I saw it, I just HAD to get it. Kinda like a fretless Jazz I saw on Craigslist a couple years ago.

haha, so glad you still love that bass!

i grabbed a p-clone on there so i can learn how to work on them myself.

not sure if i want to chase it on a budget, or just leave it alone . . .

sounds amazing with flats!

Rondo does not make a correct spec 51 or 55 Precision neck. Nor do they make a quality knock off. Even Fender doesn't make one outside the Custom Shop. Which is kind of pathetic when you think about it.

i wouldn't expect much from rondo, but some might be pleasently surprised. just depends on how nice something needs to be. i personally couldn't tell the difference between yearly specs to notice.

I'm pretty particular about neck specs. There's nothing wrong with the quality of the necks that Fender puts out on their "kind of sort of reissues". I just prefer the vintage specs for playability. If Rondo made a true to spec vintage style 51 I might give them a try. I have heard good things about their split coils over the years. Especially from the standpoint of low price basses for at home custom parts builds. If Rondo was doing the real deal neck they'd probably be charging out the wahzoo for it just like Fender does, though. :?
