I’ve made up my mind that I’ll be purchasing a new American Standard P-bass soon, but I’m still trying to decide on the color.

I love Olympic White, but I’m concerned about the possible yellowing. Now, I love the vintage look as much as the next guy, but I’m considering replacing the stock tortoise-shell pickguard with a silvery-chrome one—and that combo may look odd if any yellowing develops.

Is the yellowing of Olympic White more of a possibility with a nitrocellulose finish, rather than the American Standard’s polyurethane? Will modern, white Fenders stay white?

Any feedback would be most welcomed! Thanks!

Legit concerns, good questions. Only my opinion, I think Fender is using state of the art in all they're doing with the American Standard line, including the finish. I've played a few, all were beautiful.

Remember one thing, noone will look at your bass the way you do.

Enjoy your new bass.

Yellowing will take many years if you do not subject the guitar to harsh lighting.
I have a 22 year old white (slightly yellowing) Strat with a silver/black pickguard on it and it looks really cool to me. I think the silver/chrome would probably look pretty good with a yellowing guitar.

We will have aged less gracious over time than our polyurethane finishes. Even with the new thin finish, it is still polyurethane. Unless you overexpose your instrument in the sun, it is much less likely to turn yellow than the nitrocellulose finishes.

I agree with Chet (CA Feathers) on this one. It would look awesome either way you put it. Even if it yellows with time, it'll still look good with your pg choice.

That's a very good point you've made there, I have an Olympic white P-Bass
(For pics etc go to my recent P-Bass topic)

How long do we think it'll take before the colour starts to yellow a little bit? Not that I want or don't want it to, it's just a matter of interest.
I was gonna say something about the smoke in pubs would make the colour age a bit but seeing as there's now been the smoking ban in the UK for nearly a year now, there's no need for that. And I'm 15, I've got a lot of gigging with that thing to do!

i don't know for sure about the yellowing but i think that by the time it yellows it will look vintage. it will probably even be vintage by that time.
