I have a 1994 MIM Fender Precision which I bought new at a guitar shop in Minneapolis. It appears to be a bit of an odd duck and I can't find one similar on eBay or through Google search. Below are pictures and particulars. If anyone can give me any insight into this instrument I would appreciate it. I don't want to sell it and I don' care about the value. This bass has a very unique sound and it plays great.

It has both Precision and a Jazz pickups. Each pickup has a separate, nested Volume/Tone control. This really allows for a wide range of tonal possibilities. There is no toggle switch so I don't think it's a Precision Plus.

The pickups are active. There is a 9-volt battery accessible through a plate on the back.

It has 22 frets and the body style seems a bit exaggerated when compared to other P-Basses.

The pick guard does not extend down to the control knobs. I can't find a picture of another P-Bass like that.

    "Licensed by Schaller" tuners

Hey thanks! Looking up some information on them now. They seem pretty rare. Can't even find one on eBay. I just know I love this and it sounds and plays awesome.

I sold it to a friend 15 years ago when I was poor but I told him he had to sell it back to me if I ever wanted it back. I just got it back today. It was like seeing an old friend after a long time.

Cool. They are fairly rare in the mass produced sense. Definitely a cool instrument. The P/J set up with the stack knob design like the original J bass makes them very versatile and cool. Enjoy! There was a guy in one of the "hair bands" that swore by them, I believe. Not sure which one. Definitely a keeper.

Technically these are the Precision Bass Special model made in 1994 through 1996. Kubicki preamp and stacked controls. Otherwise standard MIM level hardware except fore the unique stacked knobs. Hard to improve the tone on these by upgrading anything, even the pickups. Very robust and bright preamp. I had a white blonde one. Nice grain on the top showing through. The "Cowpoke" nickname came long after the model was redesigned. It is sort of a cross between a JP90 and a 51 P-Bass with a Jazz neck and downsized headstock. The pickguard is so small as to be almost non-functional. Often touted as "RARE" by sellers, they are not truly rare being a mass production instrument, just rarely come up for sale as most people who have one keep it a long time. I have seen both active versions like mine and passive versions. The actives are killers and I'd pass on the passive. The white blonde and sunburst ones are especially pretty. They are very unique looking and were abundant in the day. When I bought mine there were about 6 of them at McFayden Music in Charlotte. The blonde ones were ash but I'm not sure about the wood used on the others. There were also see through red, blue and green ones that appeared dyed as much as painted.

They are a good reliable cheap gigging active MIM Fender.
