So I may have gotten myself into a pickle. I'm 16 I've played bass since I was 8, and I may have let my teen age "know it all" mindset get the best of me. My first bass was a 1983 USA Peavey Foundation. I recently sold this to upgrade to a used Fender American Precision. I found one for sale locally for $600 with a fender hard case and the guy threw in an MXR Graphic EQ pedal. I thought I knew enough about fender guitars to go ahead and just buy it without playing it, without even really checking it out. It was presented as a 2004 Fender American Standard Precision Bass. I bought it brought it home. It played like a dream, sounded great. Every guitar I've ever bought Ive always taken apart and cleaned and inspected just to make sure there aren't any general problems. But when I took the neck off this bass I seen something I didn't expect and honestly kind of upset me. The neck was stamped May 05 2003. Then under that was written with what looks like an ink pen HWY-1 PB. Is my bass a Highway One or an American series Precision? I And either way was it worth the 600?? Thanks! Ps. I don't really blame the seller for this he didn't really know a whole lot about fenders he wasn't even a musician. He told me he bought it from a friend years ago when his friend needed some money so idk maybe it was some type of scam I'm not sure.

Here's the serial number: Z3070718

In American bass as I see on 2003 Fender Frontline :

American Deluxe
Deluxe series
American series
Highway 1

No American Standard

American Series have truss nut adjustment at the body
Highway 1 at the peg head

Both have serial number on the back of the peg head (IMO)
Mexican made serial number on the front of peg head

Wich one is yours ?

If the truss rod is accessible from the nut, then it's a 1st generation Highway 1 Precision. The graphite support rods didn't came into surface until 2006.

Ok based on that was the 600 a decent price? With the HS case and MXR pedal?

Let's see, hmmmmm, you got a bass that you're happy with, it's what was it was said, you're satisfied.

To me, that says,

SUCCESS!!

Always glad to hear a happy ending.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you want to, go ahead, it's your bass. I would suggest you wait until you're settled on what you really want, we all get compulsive.

My recommendations would be,

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... ass-pickup

When I upgraded my pups on my '07 FSR Precision, I got Seymor Duncan SPB-3's, I wish I would have gotten Fender.

I never had a desire to change any of my bridges, from what I've heard, the Fender high mass bridge is good.

Have fun!

If he did indeed end up with a Highway 1, the hardware and electronics are pretty much the same as on the MIM Fenders of that time... Agreed that the hardware is probably just fine, but IME/IMO the pickups aren't anything to write home about...

I've had the Fender '62s and preferred Duncan's SPB-1s over them for classic P Bass sound - and like the SPB-3s for a more modern rock type of sound, but pair them both up with atleast a .1uF cap to knock down some highs...

I swapped pups because the original ones were crap. Don't misunderstand, the SPB-3's are killer pups, quiet, powerful and good tone. They just don't have the "Fender" sound as I hear it.

I haven't hurt the bass by putting them on, probably 8 out of 10 nwouldn't notice it.

Agreed 100% on all of the above - the SPB-3s have a great sound that is all their own, but it isn't what one would think is a classic Fender tone... One the other hand, the SPB-1s are all about classic Fender tone - I have them in my '76 P, and they were an improvement over the originals, and slightly better than Fender's '62s, IMO/IME...

The 3s are currently in an '09 Highway One, the 1s still in my '76 - the Highway One is my workhorse rock/modern country bass, and kills it in that capacity... If I change the 1s out on my '76, it'll probably be for a set of Fralin over-wounds...

Truthfully, some of the best sounding P bass pickups I've heard to date are the ones in the current American Standards - but I haven't seen a source for them yet...

The 4-string MIA Standards use CS '60s P-Bass pickups. Original '62s were OEM on the now-discontinued AVRI '62 Ps.
