American Series necks feature graphite reinforcements and rolled fretboard edges with meticulous attention to the nut and fret job. Bodies are made from non-veneered alder or ash and drilled for string-through-body mounting. You have the choice of rosewood or maple for the fretboards (pau ferro on the Jazz Bass V). S1 switch for series/parallel tones.

In 2006 the American Jazz Bass V has been updated with a 4+1 tuner configuration.

The first generation Highway 1 basses lacked off those features.

AFAIK, in '06 the Highway One got necks with the posiflex rods - before that, their necks were nearly identical to the MIM series Standards, with the trussrod adj. at the nut instead of the heel of the neck...

IIRC, American Series/Standards got the posiflex rods in the mid 90s - they'll also have better pickups, electronics, hardware - besides being a higher quality instrument, on average...

IME/IMO, the necks with the rods are worth the extra expense - they're more stable, and less likely to have dead spots...
