I purchased a Fender Precision Elite II a few weeks back. It was not packaged well inside the case, although it was a good case, and could slide around a little. Somehow, the bass developed a slight flaw in the finish where the black top coat looks like it was pushed aside, on the edge of the lower bout, a couple inches in front of the jack. No amount of feeling around inside the case on my part revealed anything obvious that could have caused the damage. It is just a small area,1/8" in diameter or so, but shows up as bright white against a black background.

So here is the dilemma. The seller is upset with the damage and wants to pay to have it repaired/touched up professionally. However, even with the new flaw, it is still an original finish in very good vintage condition. Without the flaw, it could have been called near mint. If I fix the spot, it has now been touched up and, imo, loses value, especially in the long run when the repair will surely become obvious.

What would you do?

I'd leave it alone in it's original near factory state. You're the collector Steve, and know what's best.

If I had an Elite II, I wouldn't be online typing this.

Can it be buffed out with a polisher? if not I'd leave it,.... Nice find by the way. :)

Y'all probably knew what my decision would be. The fix would look great, probably for the rest of my lifetime, but not for the rest of the bass's lifetime. Even though it went from near mint to very good...perhaps low excellent, I can't mess with the finish.

Thanks for the mental health check.

Leave it as it is. There is no garantee the repair will be invisible.

And it is original now.

Agree leaving it original is always better. Just look at it as a free relic treatment.

There is another option that you can consider.

When a small flaw is on an original black finish you can use some water color paint to touch up the spot just so it doesn't drive you crazy when you are playing it.

The touch up can be washed away with a little water if and when you want to go back to original finish status.

That way you can 'have your perfect bass and keep it original too'.

Lets see that Elite!

PS: Go back to the seller and have him rebate you the cost of a Pro-repair if you decide to do it. Good luck with that bass.
