Last week, I completed a trade and would like your comments. What I gave: 1968 Fender Bassman Silverface dripedge matching top and bottom in good condition. What I got: 2004 American Fender PBass '62 Reissue in excellent condition. The serial number is V145208 located on the back plate. There is only Fender Precision Bass on the headstock. First of all, can anyone tell me that indeed this is an American PBass vintage '62 reissue? I checked online and it has the V and 6 digits, so I think it is ligit. Second, when I was registering the bass on this forum site, the drop down only shows reissue models of '57(?), '63, and '64, but no mention of '62. Can someone shed some light for me? Also please answer my poll question. Thanks

I'm pretty sure you lost on this. Don't quote me, though. A vintage half stack in good condition I can't imagine going for under 1500 bucks. If you look for a bit online you can usually find 62 RIs for a decent price. (between 1k to 1300 used and around 1500 NOS) Your serial number falls in line with the AVS line. However, I don't know what year. Though the silverface era of amps does not carry the weight of the blackface era in terms of value. In the end I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you weren't using the amp and will use the P then that's all that matters.

As far as the on line registering. I wouldn't even bother. There's no warranty on a used instrument and the on line thing has nothing to do with the warranty anyhow. It's just a tool for Fender to track what is popular and spam you with emails and the like.

As long as you're happy, I think that's pretty even trade.

Just email your serial number to consumerrelations@fender.com and ask for all information.

I hope you enjoy your new bass. The '62 AVRI's enjoy an excellent reputation for craftsmanship; tone & playability. :)

I think you came out ahead on that trade.
The only way we can help you legitimatize your bass is to see some pictures of it.

It is even then hard to tell from some photographs the exact vintage of the bass.

It should be dated on the neck heel, but you will have to take off the neck to see it.

The reason that you didn't see it on the Fender site is that Fender is no longer making the '62 reissue.

They continue with the '57 and '63 Precision and they are Custom Shop models.

Good luck with your bass.

Actually after a little research I'd say you broke about dead even. There's the exact stack you mention. (possibly yours) on Reverb for 1200. Which is about the going rate of a really well cared for used AVS 62RI.

Also, both the 62 and 57 were discontinued in the same year. 2012. The current AVS models are the 58 and 63.

I also think you did just fine. I just sold, this week, a Bassman 135 with an older, late 60's or very early 70's 2x15 cab..I would have made that deal and smiled. You did not get hurt. It is not a barn burner in either direction. All good.

Rob deserves KUDOS for checking that number.

A 62 AVRI P-Bass is worth more than a CBS vintage silverface Bassman stack to me because I'd actually use the bass while I probably would not ever use that amp. Old Bassman tube stuff might be collector cool and have about the same dollar value, but today's modern amps and cabs are way louder, lighter, more versatile, cheaper...etc. Maintaining old tube gear is practically like having an extra part time job that costs you money unless you pay someone to maintain it for you which would mean you'd be throwing even more dollars at it forever and ever. I think this was a great trade for you! I'd have done it with no hesitation whatsoever.

BC is right the 57 and 62 AVRI models were replaced by the 58 and 63 AVRI models over a year ago which is why Fender doesn't register them anymore....they have all been sold off. I can't find a new 57 or 62 anywhere. The fact they are no longer being produced will have a positive impact on value eventually.

I guess it was time for a change as they'd been in production a decade or so, but the years 1957 and 1962 marked historic changes in the design of the Precision and that made both of them sort of special to me. Congratulations, you have a really really nice instrument there and got the better part of the deal from my point of view. That's one instrument I'd keep the rest of my life.

+1 on modern amps being much more useful than vintage tube amps.

I would value a 62 AVRI Precision Bass more than a drip edge Bassman amp and cab.
I can buy a vintage bassman cabinet for 250 bucks!
The amp has the value but I still don't see many people getting more than $600 for the amp.
Remember that listing prices are not selling prices!

The head is nice but they weigh a lot more and have more maintenance issues than a modern solid state amp.

I'm now doing gigs with a single 10" bass cab. and an Ampeg PB250 head.
I can walk into a gig with my bass on my back and the cabinet in my hand. LOL

The keyboard player is very jealous!

I could never do that with tube amps, but I do still love how tube amps sound!

I don't know. While I definitely agree the 62RI is the winner here in usability. It's an amazing bass. However, While I love my hybrid SWR550X it's still not the same as an old tube amp. Sure, the maintenance is a pain, and they are heavy. However, they sound incredible and the dynamics are important. As it is I'm torn between going with a modern Bassman and possibly getting another old 70's Bassman 100 or 135. Honestly, the modern ones are much more dependable, and have all the great modern features. (built in DI, ect) However, they can't be used as both a guitar and bass amp like the vintage models. (I play both) The only Bassman that can is the 59 Reissue which is basically worthless for a gigging bass amp outside of coffee houses. Plus, as you said. I can get a 70's Bassman for 500 bucks and go through and be good to go. A modern Bassman costs 3 times that at least.

I have an opinion, for a change. I just sold my Bassman 135 with an older 2x15 JBL cab, either bassman or showman. It has a really mellow sound, but it had no carry outdoors. It was great inside, and I hated to get rid of it, but two amps that size was too big a foot print. As a collector, I miss it already - but the poster did get the deal right.

I bought the Super Bassman awhile back, and could not be happier. I went with two smaller cabs, a 4x10 and a 1x15 that are both light enough for this old man to toss around. The amp comes in around 75 pounds however. I use my Rumble 100 for normal gigs and practice with the Super, but if we are outdoors, which is a lot, the Super goes along and just crushes the airwaves - without losing that mellow tube sound.

I know that from a purely Bass standpoint the Super Bassman is the way to go. The fact that the modern versions cost 3 times what a vintage one does and they can't support guitar gives me pause. I was thinking of getting the SB with the 410 and 115 aswell. Using the 410 alone on 8 ohms for smaller gigs and adding the 115 when I really need the oomph of the full rig. It sure is a LOT of cash, though. My older model Pro 115s still sound like a million bucks, but they're really beat. Also, they're really, really heavy. Unlike the new Neo cabs.
