Here are some pictures of my dad's old P Bass. Alot of people have said it's a 73 or 74. But one thing that puzzles everyone is that there are no PAT numbers on the headstock, anywhere. And it shows no signs that they were ever any PAT numbers, I looked for any blemish, or streaks that would suggest that the numbers maybe got rubbed of or have worn off over time. It's a mystery that maybe someone here can help us with.

I know we can find out the Month and Year by removing the neck, but my dad has never removed the neck, and he doesnt want it removed. He's afraid of messing it up or something.

My dad purchased this bass in 1974 for $380. Over the years, the original pickups were changed out, and he doesnt have them anymore. There are SD Basslines in it now. Also the pickguard broke a long time ago, and has been replaced. He has the original chrome pickup cover, but not the bridge cover.

The bridge sattle screws are original, old, and worn out, and they move while playing, which makes the bass go out of tune in the middle of a song. Also, its hard to set the action right with the bridge in this condition.

I am trying to get this bass back in great playing condition, and would like it to look/sound as close to the way it originaly looked/sounded in '73.

So what pickups would you guys put in this bass?
Also, what replacement Bridge / saddles, ect would you install in it.

Thanks for your help.

The number on the Neckplate is 391130

It's a nice bass. I'm afraid to get the actual year you'd need to remove the neck. You can replace the screws on the bridge, or replace it w/Fender bridge. If he wants to keep it original, there are plenty Fender pups he can replace it with. Good luck.

If the neck plate is original the serial number is clearly visible in the last pic you posted.

It's nice to see an old bass belonging to someone who wants to play it.

E Bay is a good way to find PUP's that are the same year. THis way you can get her back as close to original.

According to the number on the neck plate which is known as the "F"plate that bass is a 73 . From 370000 - 550000 is a 73 . The oversized Fender Precision Bass logo is found on basses from the late sixties up to 76 and was applied under the finish . Fender stopped putting the Pat numbers on the headstock and opted for the stamped numbers on the neck plate .

That info is from The Fender Bass book .

Your Dad's bass is a true classic ! Like I said before 3 tone sunburst and tortoise shell pguard ! beautiful combination !
