OK guy's! Here is my delima. I have a been saving up for a New Fender Bass and just about ready to go for it.
I just need the opinion of the folks in this forum to make my final decision. I play Blues, Rock, Country and Jazz. I love the sound of the American P bass but my hands feel a little more comfortable on the Jazz neck that is 1/8 in. thinner at the neck. Needless to say , I have small hands, but my wife loves em :)
Will a Jazz bass with the P/J combination of pickups give me the same low end thunder I get from a P bass ??? Or can I buy a P bass with a P/J
set up and have a Jazz neck put on it ?
I would really like an American made P with the P/J set up and a J neck.

Your comments and suggestions are really appreciated.
Thanks

Reno :)

A passive P/J bass unless it has some sort of switching will not give you pure P bass tone. Due to loading. Which means that when you turn your J pup down it is still pulling even tough you don't hear it. I believe there are models available that will circumvent this for you with switching. Some of them are P necks so that won't help you. (The Tony Franklin) I do not know if there is one bass which has the P/J switching and J neck. The Duff McKagan has the B width P neck. (Though that isn't American made anyway)

An american made P or P/J with a Jazz neck? Hmmm... not sure if it exists as a production model in the American line. I'm not a Jazz neck player, though. So don't take my word for that.

However, I would think this would be THE PERFECT use of the ADE option at the top of the Fender Home Page. I believe you can order an American made P bass with a J neck that way.

The Reggie Hamilton will give you a P/J (no switching) and a J neck. It's American made. Though it's a Custom Shop model and therefore costs a pretty penny. Plus it has tons of extras you may not want. Like active pick ups and drop D tuner, ect.

I was just about to suggest The MIM Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass,... it's cheaper than the Custom Shop version (they retail for $980.00 street price) & it has the same Hardware as the Custom Shop version,...... I have a 3 tone Sunburst MIM Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass,..... in my opinion it's Fenders best kept secret,.....you'd think there would be more discussion on the Forum for this bass that I refer to as the Swiss army knife of Basses...you should try one,...it's versatile,... with an awesome jazz neck & an American split coil P Bass pickup & a Custom Noiseless single coil Jazz pickup,....endless tone options between these pickups & the active /passive option.... :)

Give the Nate Mendel signature Precision a go. Shaved/slimed down neck (just like mine) plus Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder (just like mine) plus a BadAss II bass bridge (just like mine). You should love it! http://www.fender.com/basses/precision-bass/nate-mendel-p-bass-rosewood-fingerboard-candy-apple-red/ I first modded my '76 P in '85. Not sure when Nate did his or if he just 'found' it that way. Anyway a great factory hot rod for ya!

Another factory hot rod to consider is the Vintage 70's Jazz Hot Rod. Vintage '63 P & '74 J p'ups. Heavy Hi-Mass Bridge. Slim Jazz neck with very nice compund radius fingerboard. http://www.fender.com/basses/jazz-bass/vintage-hot-rod-70s-jazz-bass-rosewood-fingerboard-candy-apple-red/

Also as King of Pain pointed out in an earlier post, Fender's new ADE is an excellent option to exercise.

Boom! I think you nailed it with this one. I knew there would be an American made model that slipped my mind. Both the Vintage Hot Rod offerings are beautiful instruments and the Jazz model fits the OP's criteria of being American made, P/J set up, with a Jazz neck. This is a seriously nice bass. Nitro finish, killer Vintage Series pick ups. Good call. I don't see how one could go wrong with this bass.

Oh wow. I didn't even notice it came with the hi-mass bridge, too. That is a whole lot of bass. The compound radius to boot makes both of these basses one of the most "custom" run basses I've seen outside the custom shop. Seriously a well refined vintage tone machine.

Yes the Vintage Hot Rod 70's Jazz Bass is a beautiful intrument,..(as is the Vintage Hot Rod 60's P-Bass) ... I neglected to mention it in my earlier post because I thought Reno007 was on a budget,..... As I mentioned in a couple of posts on other threads here on the Forum,... I bought a Candy Apple Red Vintage Hot Rod 70's Jazz Bass in late March,..... & of all the 9 basses that I own (8 of them are Fenders) I can't stop playing this bass(I'm actually feeling guily like I'm neglecting the rest of the heard),.... I also love the fact that it's passive,.... I love the Vintage 74' Jazz pickup & 63' P-bass pick up combination & Fender has done an awesome job with their version of the BADASS II,... (very nice bridge) ... this bass also has a U profile neck,.....it's a bit meatier but it's still a very nice playing neck,...... it's worth every penny if you're into to shelling out $2680. taxes included (that's how much I paid in Canadian dollars) for a Bass that you'll find hard to put down,..... I should add that I played the Vintage Hot Rod 60s P-Bass at Long & McQuade music & it's equally a nice playing bass,...I just preferred the Jazz Bass & also give the Tony Franklin Fretted P-Bass some concideration,....like the Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass it's an instrument that doesn't get much notice here on the Forum ...it's USA made & costs $1699.... & very well made. :)

James you hot rodder, you! I don't recall any New Bass Day announcement :? Once you get your hands on a real hot rod it's tough to go back to stock. Congratulations! Great Choice! {It's a good thing I'm left-handed or I'd be broker than broke}

I noticed in your OP you mentioned "NEW" bass. If you are not locked into a new bass their might be some options. Fender used to make a p bass with an "A" neck I'm pretty sure the nut was 1 1/2 inches on that. Another route would to round up a nice used P bass
then find jazz neck for it. Just a thought. I kind of like the used stuff, has that experienced vibe you know. The coolest bass I ever owned, and their have been a bunch over 40 years, was a 68 jazz with a 59 P bass neck 1 3/4" nut. but that was just a used parts bass in '73 LOL. Good luck, enjoy the hunt!

To be fair if you're worried about buying a new American made Fender you're not really on a budget. Those days passed a few years back.

You speak the truth, new prices are creeping up yearly. It doesn't seem that long ago I thought 1000.00 was crazy money for vintage reissue. I've always liked the used market myself, with exceptions of course. Sometimes a shinny new instrument is just irresistible. But as I mentioned before, sometimes that been there, done that, played that vibe is just as irresistible.

Yup. Exactly why I purchased my barely used 57RI used. 2k for a new AVS bass? I don't know. You can sure pay a lot more for a lot less, but still. I'd rather spend 1200 for one that's barely been touched. The used market is very kind on AVS RI's right now. However, the steadily climbing prices will catch up and soon. So that fun is bound to end.

You may want to check out the Dimension IV HH. It has just about the same low end (at least to my ears, but I am deaf...) as my Precision, plus I can change the sound because it has 2 pickups. I am very happy with mine.
