Now we are getting to the crux of the issue - sound to your ears.

I have a FCS60JRI with round wound strings on it. I would never consider flats, because that bass sounds really good just the way it is. And when the strings get bad, they will be replaced with another set of the same, but not until they go bad.

However, not sure I will ever put a set of rounds on anything else, ever again (just keeping one J with rounds). I even switched my 50 Anny Jazz over to flats - the first jazz I ever put flats on as far as I can remember - and it's got a nifty "tweener" sound.

Also, I will ever change flats again until it is noticeably required. I came to you guys, and to Fender, and to string manufacturers, when I started getting worried about my AV57P, not because it sounded bad, just because it had been a year and my experience was with rounds, not flats, and that was unheard of. Never could determine what strings it had from the factory, and cut the E off before opening the package Fender had suggested as the right one, only to find out it was not. The Chromes I ended up with sound good, but, and it could be in my mind, the bass does not sound as good as it did. So if I get a set of flats on a bass that sound the way I want them to, they are not coming off until they have to, ever again.

Actually, a J with rounds, a J with flats and a P with flats just about covers any possible need in my life.

Steve

I've got EXL 160s on the T-40. It's surprisingly bright. Plan on changing the rounds to Chromes when they die to help tame that.

The Elite is drop D with 120 85 70 50 rounds. The 120 D has the same tension as the 105 E. I get an awesome Tool-esque tone out of that bass.

HM is wearing nylons. Love those strings!

Spec Dlx has Chromes. Those are nice and thumpy now.

The Dimension has 160s. When I got it, I found it incredibly playable. The Dimension has a rather thin body. Eventually I realized that it has a much larger gap between the strings and body - the strings sit higher. I found that I unconsciously stick my thumb in this gap when not working the E. I used it as a model, and set all of my basses up to have this gap.

I also have a very cheap Maestro fretless with nylons.

I have a ton of tonal flexibility in the stable. :)
