Right now I'm changing rounds every 90 days or so on my Jazz. I loathe a dead round and ditch the roadkill quickly. I'm hoping for 10 years + on the flats on my Precision. They are both my main axes and I play them both fairly equally. If I'm playing straight blues and roots rock it'll just be me and my P and my Rumble 350. 8) For everything else its Jazz, Baby, Jazz with full tilt boogie roundwound tone! And don't spare the decibels!

I change my rounds on my primary jazz quite often. Like linnin, I am not a fan when they start losing it. Using EB SS, I was probably swapping them out every 40 hours of playtime, maybe six weeks?

On my primary precision I changed flats for the first time after more than a year. They had a lot of hours on them, at least 500, and still sounded good to me, but I was chicken to push it further and had a very important gig coming up. Not sure how far I will take the current set, but at least a year. (That was enough to get me fooling around with flats on a jazz, too.)

With basses in my collection, I typically change strings when they look, sound, or feel like they need changing, regardless of the calendar. But sometimes I do it just on impulse. Pull out an old bass and just decide to treat it to a makeover, regardless of whether it is needed or not.

The strings on my precision have been on it for approximately 8 years. Still sounds pretty good.

Every three months or so, except this time I bought GHS Roundwounds, which I used before and liked, but this time they totally sucked! I'm going to stop at a Guitar Center today and pik up some Ernie Ball Hybrids.

They're cheap and I've had good luck with them.

As soon as I can tell the strings are starting to lose thier "ring" ( for no better way to describe it) I'll change them. During the Summer I change them more than in the Winter but not by much.

Another wierdness of mine is guitarists and bassists who don't change strings. I can see/ understand not changing strings if you are not a gigging musician. I just don't get it though with people I hear in clubs (mostly). It's a fault of mine I guess. No biggy though. I look at it as if I'm the one with the tone happening. Stroking my own Nazi ego ! HA!! :D

Occasionally I'll talk to this guy or that guy and we'll get on the subject of string changing. Many times they will respond very proudly - " I never (or hardly ever) change my strings". A big smile comes with that -- like it's a badge of honor. To each his own. I don't lose sleep over it for sure. I posted a new topic anyway because I was getting bored with the same old same old. Another quirk I guess. :)

It baffles me when bass players continue to use long dead rounds. :? You buy rounds for the lively rich piano like tone and the animalistic growl. The sound of a dead round is just repulsive. You are far better off with a good solid set of flats than a dead round.

Another pet peeve of mine is the guy with a nice three or four thousand dollar rig that plays the mud bucket and sounds like doo-doo. Heck you can sound like that for a couple a hundred bucks!

Another one is a guy who is playing heavy rock with a Jazz bass and doesn't set the volumes right for that type music--So you have a jazz sound going on in an Ozzy song or what not or is real muffled with no high ring, sheesh I'm picky aren't I ??

I slap on a new set of EBalls on both my Fender Prec and Dean Metalman as soon as one is near breaking, this happens about once every two months for one of the two basses. I also change when I give them their quarterly cleanup (which have gotten sloppy lately, should do something about that), but damn it Eanie Balls can be expensive.

For 25+ years, I only played rounds. I used to change them as soon as they lost their zing. Drove my wife nuts! Now I let em go until they lose their snap. Been playing my basses strung with flats and nylons primarily, so I haven't had to do a string change in 21 months. The rounds still sound lively. Changed them last when I won the D'Addario D'Train sweepstakes in Oct '12. I have strings for a very long time.

NEVAH!!!!!!!!!! Well, when I used to keep a P with rounds about every 3 months. However, whatever P I run flats on gets that set of flats and they stay unless there's an issue with the string. Never broken one, but I did have a string get a little weak once from unwinding and rewinding over the years.

That being said, I ran the set on my old 51 Reissue for 6 years. Sounded killer when I sold it. The guy was DROOLING. As a matter of fact, the set of flats on my 57 Reissue were actually on my Antigua FSR Precision before I sold it. Already broken in. Tone machine. Tasty.

C'mon. Everyone knows that roundwounds are a plot by "the man" to make money off bassists by convincing them they need to change their strings. Don't be led astray.
