I've acquired a P bass, the pickup poles are not flush with the surface of the casing and seem to have dropped loose. Disassembling them reveals that they seem to need attaching to the underside of the cover. Does anybody now what kind of adhesive to use to do this, is it some kind of gel, or a glue?

Thanks

Do not put glue or anything on the pickups! It sounds like the foam rubber underneath the pickup which holds it in place in the pickup cover is either not there or is skwished down from age.The foam is also for adjusting the height of the pick up.Them other dudes who type faster than me will fill you in on what's up. Don't mess with the pickups till you know what's going on. :)

Photos would help. Is this a split pickup 2nd generation or first generation single coil? That would be good info to have. This is a common problem with first generation single coil pickups when the top of the flatwork is pulled loose. Almost unheard of in a split coil P-Bass.

Also there are vintage Precision pickups with raised poles under the "A" string.

I've honestly never ran into this issue before and one would think I'd ran into everything by now. There should be double sticky sided weatherstripping foam under any Fender P or J pickup (except the chrome humbuckers used on some Telecasters.)

It actually WAS originally weatherstripping from Sears. You can however buy short lengths of a very similar foam from places like Guitar Parts Resource.

Or Darren Riley's.

And many other parts outlets, or just find some at the hardware store but you'll have to cut it to length yourself. No big deal.
