What you have is a parts bass. A four string Fender Precision neck that's been cruely butchered to turn it into a hideous monstrosity of a five string. Signed by somebody in 1990, perhaps by the bass butcher. As firewood, I'd say it has a value of $5 USD. Burn it!

Looks like an 80 something neck but I don't get the D string barrel thing. Trying to sell that bass would be hard. Maybe 200 .

Looks like a late 70's Schecter body.

The E string is almost off the neck passed the 12th fret (looks like). You'd get up there and you'd go for a note and you'd get a "Flump" instead of a note.

Someone needs to be thrashed over this. HA!!!!!

Bobby Bare Sr was a very successful guitarist, singer, songwriter. His son Bobby Bare Jr is a fairly successful guitarist, singer, songwriter too. Google them. In 1990 either of them could have signed that bass. It's unlikely either of them owned it or butchered it -- probably a fan of one of them asked them to sign it after a show.

The body could be '70s/'80s Schecter or Boogie Bodies. But it could also be Mighty Mite (back then Mighty Mite made some really nice parts, but they don't have the collector's value of Schecter or Boogie). Pull the neck and check for markings in the neck pocket.

Most Boogie and Schecter bodies were sold unfinished. The autograph doesn't add any value so you could strip and refinish it and then at the very least the body is worth some money.

The strap is in the way -- is that a round lam fretboard appropriate for a Fender of that era, or a slab board? I'm not sure how the added fifth tuner thingy/string tree is attached. If it's easily removable and it's a genuine Fender neck it's worth decent money too. It looks like you could just put a regular string tree in its place, maybe with an oversized screw or dowel and redrill the hole.

The added fifth string is crudely done, but if you take that off and put on a 4-string bridge it looks like it'd be a pretty nice bass. Certainly not firewood worth $5. If it's a genuine Fender neck that's not butchered beyond restoration and a Schecter or Boogie body it's worth many hundreds in parts.

I have looked at this post a bunch of times, trying to find something helpful to input. Tonight, I suddenly realized that atolleter may not have bought this bass...but is thinking about it.

If you have not bought it, do not, unless you are buying it for parts - and I reference strayedstrater's comments.

If you have bought it, enjoy it, but remove the Fender logo (please), or part it out - again referencing strayedstrater's comments.

Every month, I have contact with at least half a dozen people that buy a Fender Bass that is either a phoney, misrepresented country of origin, or a mixed parts bass. I had no idea the problem was so widespread until I started collecting. This forum has saved many, many people from wasting money, but there is a whole bunch that buys first, asks later.

Isnt the neck from a 78 Precision Bass? I intended to possible return to a 4 stringer, switching the bridge shouldnt be too hard.

Thank you Strayed, to be honest I got it just for the neck. Seems like many P-Basses, they fitted a J pickup but the neck has not been butchered.

Can't tell from those pics, because the strap is covering the end of the fretboard. Is it a round lam (veneer) fretboard or a slab fretboard?

Genuine decals were easy to get in the '70s and '80s, and there were many aftermarket replacement necks available. Even a round lam fretboard isn't absolute proof that it's a Fender neck, because Tokai also did round lam boards back then (but they used an allen socket truss rod adjuster at the heel instead of a slotted heel adjuster).

The genuine Fender replacement decals didn't come with serial numbers, so there's a good chance that it is an actual '78 Precision neck. But home computers and ink jet printers were around in the early '80s so I wouldn't base verification just on the decal.

I'll have to take the neck apart and check the butt I guess to be sure.

The D string thing as you put it is called a string tree anchor, it goes down to what seems to be a wilkinson bridge of some kind, they sell some 5 strings kit bridge so you dont have to drill headstock to put in tuner.
