O.K., my latest train of thought is to sell everything, keep my FSR Precision, and of course the Strat., get a AMERICAN VINTAGE '63 PRECISION BASS® and only one amp.

The voices are getting louder!

All I can say is this. I recently took the plunge on a barely used AVS 57RI Precision. I'm looking to sell both my FSR and Classic 70's bass. Probably even my acoustic Fender BG-31. Get back to an all tube rig with either a Bassman Pro 100T and 410, or Super Bassman 300 and 610. Then get another AVS sometimes down the road. (No rush, I'll wait for the right one)

I love my current rig and it's served me without issue for almost a decade of solid gigging. With NO need for maintenance, at all. I love both my MIM Precisions. Believe me. I'm no gear snob. I'll take a classic series bass over an American Special or Standard any day of the week and twice on Sunday. However, the AVS series basses are really something else. I can positively say that my 57RI is a much superior bass to even my old vintage 78 Precision that I used to own. It's just that nice. There's something about them that just "feel" right. To me, anyway.

I'm definitely in the process of "refining" my stable. I'm going to get back to full Fender tube tone, and eventually have two AVS basses. Though honestly I could probably be happy with just the one and never look back. As a steady gigging musician it certainly never hurts to have a back up in case a repair is needed, right?

If you've got the means and know you like the specs on a 63 Precision ahead of time I can't think of any reason not to do it. I really doubt you'd regret it.

For the kind of money that they want for a reissue '63 Precision you could buy a Vintage reissue '62 for about half the price and some dealers still have them in stock if you look hard enough.

If you buy a used '62 vintage reissue Precision, you could save even more money and still scratch that itch.

For $2700 dollars, I would be looking at a real early 70's Precision that will be guaranteed to appreciate in value and I 'll bet that you could find a refinished actual 60's Fender bass for less. It may need some restoration, but you would have a real historic Fender bass and not just a re-creation of a vintage instrument.

I like my real Fenders over any reissues, but that's just me.

Spend your money as you wish.

Just my .02

AV57P is my favorite bass and primary bass. It is really something special. And through the Super Bassman? Get out of here. What a pair.

Yeah! What Steve said, and get a Fender Super Bassman too while you're at it to complete the retro vibe & look. That '63 P sure is sweet!

This is EXACTLY what I did when I got my 57RI. (Though to be honest I'm a devotee of the Raised A pick up so the price break was just a bonus. The 57 was the model I prefer.) The thing had barely been played, everything was included with it and I got it for 1200 bucks. A really, really nice deal. I'm more partial to the maple boards and 50's specs. However, if you dig the early 60's Ps. I know I've seen quite a few used 62s out there for about the same cash. All of them looked very well cared for, and these basses are really well built. They'll last a long time. I haven't seen a black one, but I've seen a ton of 3ts and a couple Oly White 62 ReIssues in that exact ballpark for price. You really cannot go wrong for that money. Considering that's less that what you'd pay for a brand new American Standard and the quality and tone is definitely superior.

These would be my choices, with twin 15" cabs,

I appreciate the comments and advice. I have no plans on buying any more unless I sell some. I just need to downscale, there just isn't enough room for all of them.

As far as finding a great deal, the only good deal was on my fretless. I just don't come across bargains.

Should I get to work reasonable hours again, the process will begin. I expect to take a hit on selling them off, I just don't want to get hurt too bad.

I think it would satisfy me. In retrospect i do regret buying all this stuff. I'm way too impulsive and impatient.

Time will tell. In the meantime, I'll look for a '62 AVI, I haven't played a "63, but I did have the chance to play a '62. Around here, there are very few higher end basses. I was at a Guitar Center last week and their inventory was pitiful.

Wish me luck.

Oxfan,

I am on the job. Stay tuned, it's going to get scary, but I am going to find two basses that will fill all your needs.

In the meantime, go test drive the Super Bassman. I got the 1x15 and 4x10 cabs, because I am old, and going without a 15 seems sacraligious. (plus the two cabs are managable by me, weight wise) Might be better arrangements. Have a bud with a 8x10 that is also satisfied, but he is 31, exactly half my age - I try not to hate him for that.

The Super Bassman amp is very, very, nice.

I'd like to try a Super Bassman but there aren't any anywhere! I would buy one sight unseen, too many people have said too many good things about them.

As far as 15" speakers, they're the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. I'm old school too, in every way possible.

Go for a Vintage Hot Rod 60's P-Bass instead & a Bassman 100T with 4x10 cabinet or the new Rumble 500 head with 4x10 cabinet..... Trust me
