Hello,
I am at present researching and collecting information regarding the Guitars and Amplifiers that the "Sex Pistols" used between 1975 and 1978.
Glen Matlock played a Fender Precision Bass in 1975/76.

I'm seeking advice and information (Colour, year, pickups, etc) of this particular guitar.

"Am I correct that it is natural ash body, 1-piece maple neck/fretboard and a 4-ply tortoise shell (Brown) pickguard".

Please find the two photographs below:

Photo2: 12th September 1976 - Fforde Grene Pub, Leeds.

Any help in identifying this Bass would be most appreciated.

All the best.

In October 1976 Glen made the switch to the fireglo Rickenbacker 4001 which became his main bass until his departure from the band in 1977. His silverface Bassman 100 head/cab outfit was purchased for £99.

For the band's reunion tours both Glen and Steve used Ampeg and Marshall amplifiers.

Glen plays a sunburst AVRI '62 nowadays.

Matlock had also a rosewood-neck Precision finished in Olympic White which was used as a spare; it became his main gigging bass since he rejoined the Pistols in 1996.

Looks like 2x15 cab to me. Definitely not a 4x12, and to the best of my knowledge Fender did not make a 410 at that time.

Hi "Chromeface", many thanks for your reply. Just a couple of points:

* Glen played the Fender Precision from 1974 to October 1976. When The Pistols signed to EMI records in October '76 he obtained the Rickenbacker 4001, which he played until 1977.

* You mentioned that "...His silverface Bassman 100 head/cab outfit was purchased for £99 in 1974..."

I believe that purchase was in 1992/3, as mentioned in "The Fender News webpage" when Glen was interviewed in 2009, and posted on October 2, 2009, where he states "...the very first amp I used in a band was a Bassman®. And, um, I don’t have the original one, but I’ve gone ’round all the other amps in the world. And 16 years ago, I was doing some little gig somewhere, and I didn’t have an amp. And my mate called me up and said, “Glen, I’ve seen this amp for sale; you have to go down there in the morning and queue up (chuckles).” So I went down and queued up, and I bought a Bassman head and cabinet for £99, which was not a lot of money back then, but I’ve used it ever since..."

Hi "linnin", many thanks for your reply.
Just to let you know that on the wiki page for Fender Bassman it states:
"...Bassman 100 (1972–1977) - Silverface piggyback head - four 12" speakers, 100 Watts/RMS..."

Also, here is a catologue from 1972:

All the best.

That Rickenbacker 4001 is FireGlo (red) not MapleGlo (natural).

I sure would like to hear Matlock playing on some all new Sex Pistols music, that's for dang sure.

The only thing I have to contribute to this thread, is they stole a heap of gear from David Bowie's final Ziggy Stardust show, while the roadies were passed out drunk.

Matlock's lines and his Precision tone are great. Some of my favorites. Punk in general, and the Pistol's in particular get a bad rap and it's really unfortunate. However, if you know anything about songwriting you know Glen's chord progressions he came up with for the Pistols are really great.

The verdicts still out on half that, and in some circles all of it. He was a mess. Poor bastard. Saddest part is that Lydon says he was coming along alright in the beginning. If you watch some of the live videos when he first joined the band you can hear it too. Stumbled a bit here and there, but he was learning the songs and his way around the bass. Then it all went to hell. He death spiraled real quick. Smack will ruin your day for sure. Even worse, having a monkey and a vampire like Nancy on your back at the same time.

Okay I remember- He beat his girlfriend to death right? Then they were going to come get him so he shot up some stuff and died. At least that's the story I remember that was in this documentary. I guess the court would be out on it permanently since old Sid bit the dirt.

No, she was stabbed in the stomach and bled out on the bathroom floor. While he was smacked out of his mind and unconscious. There are two schools of thought. Sid woke up, they fought, he stabbed her. Somehow lost all the money they had. Then passed back out and woke up not remembering anything. Or that she woke up, called the dealer, the dealer came and stole the money, stabbed her and left her for dead. When he came to in the morning he found her. As you said, Sid's dead. So we'll likely never know.

An objective look at the evidence suggests Sid did NOT kill Nancy.

Alan Parker made a fantastic documentary in 2009 titled WHO KILLED NANCY?

Since the police assumed Sid had stabbed her, they never did a proper investigation.

Parker has a cold-case squad approach it, and Vicious is basically exonerated.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, Sid was very mythic and larger than life.

When I watch actual footage of him today, all I see is a young kid who never really had a chance.
