Hi,
I've been looking at a few early 70's parts to replace on my 1973 P bass that I'm restoring. In short, are there any reasonably obvious "tells" on an original vintage piece, vs a falsely-aged new piece? Anything that would likely show in an ebay auction, for instance?

Honestly, if I was looking at an eBay auction for a c1970s pickguard only, I would find it very difficult to know for sure it was legit. There are some obvious things to check like the number of screw holes or the placement of the thumb rest, but other than that, I really don't know.

I see some pick guards on folks' instruments that sometimes have red letters or marks written on the backside... sometimes there are little cracks near the screw holes... and slight discoloration. But I know all of that can be faked. I recently purchased one off ebay that claimed it was an original 1972 white P bass pick guard. It was in excellent condition for a '72, a little knob wear, some truss-screw wear, faint discoloration but still fairly bright, and it was priced as if it was an original. In person, I also see a little wear from playing, but I fear it still looks too good and might be a fake. It does not have any little hairline cracks near screw holes, no writing or marks on the back... I don't care so much that I might have wasted money, but I want something authentic!

Its tough to tell a 70's guard from a fake without having a real '70's guard to compare it to.

All early 70's PGs have a small beveled edge for the truss rod adjustment.

They have a small bit of foil shielding just under the controls.

Many have red marks from some kind of inspection process.

The tortoise shell PGs are 4 ply.

The white ones are three ply.
The black ones are also 3 ply.

That appears to be an early 70's Precision bass pick guard.

It could also be a 1960's pick guard or a well done after market pick guard.

I don't know without seeing it in person, but it appears to be correct for a pre-1974 Fender Precision bass.

Good luck with your bass.

I know it is made for the P bass, but just not sure if it really is a vintage piece. If it is truly vintage, it is in excellent shape. Thank you for your comments. I'd appreciate anyone else's comments, as well.
