The pickup in my main recording bass is the stock pickup on a '51RI P-Bass. I have yet to find a reason to change it as it is loud, thumpy and meets my recording needs. :D

On my gigging basses, the main two P-Basses both carry Duncan SPB-1s. Combined with La Bella flats, I couldn't ask for a better live tone. Too good to even describe. :|

I loved the pup in my 51RI when I had it. I miss that bass terribly. A lot of people go the hot 1/4lb option, or the humbucking stacked coil option. I never found the need to change it. I loved the tone it got. Beautiful when paired with flats.

Agreed. I myself did consider changing the pup some time ago, but eventually grew fond of the stock one. Its loud, dirty and just works in the studio. Its probably the exact tone I want for any and all future recordings.

One of my custom built Warmoth basses is based on a '54 P. I use a Lindy Fralin stack 51 pickup in that bass. Its not the same at all. I do love it, but its nothing like the one that comes stock on a '51RI. In fact, the stack has characteristics of a standard split P pup.

Yup. I never found the hum to be a problem when I had it, but some do. The humbucking properties of the stacked coil make it a more practical pick up if it irritates the player. (or his sound guy) However, I'm a firm believer that hum is where the soul lives. I'm not a fan of the fact that the Custom Shop has changed the current Limited Relic 55 Precision to the Stacked Coil. I think that's a mistake. It's fine in a bass like the Dusty Hill sig model and for custom ordered basses they should make both available.

However, if they're putting out a reissue of a 55 Precision, then why put in a pick up that wasn't invented yet? I've been debating on whether I want to pick up a CS 55 used if I see one. However, I think I may shoot for one of the older models, or the CS 51 as it'll have the true Single Coil P pick up. While the Raised A 57 is my favorite split coil P. I consider the original Precision pick up to be my ideal. The power of a split coil with the smoothness of a J. I truly believe Leo got it right the first time.

My main is CSTB '57-style "black sparkle" P-bass but with a "fatter" '59 pickup - that sounds really, really great IMO - haven't seen them anywhere else so might be a special one-off for this bass?

I think it's might be an couple of one-offs by the Custom Shop in that color for showcases in Europe. I've seen a Jazzmaster in that same color in a shop in Denmark and I bought this from a shop in Germany - but I haven't seen others besides those two. I probably would have called it "silverburst sparkle" instead, but the shops uses "black sparkle" so maybe that's what Fender calls it.

Put a Vintage Fender in my '64 because the Duncans that were in it when I bought it were tired. It sounds better than another stock '64 I played not long ago....couldn't spend a grand or more for an actual '64 pickup. Have DiMarzios in my '76 that have been there since I bought it around 1980. Still sounds really good with a lot of punch.

I really like the pickups that came with the Ensenada Jazz Basses from 1995 to 1999-ish. I saw this vid and noticed the tone(along with some other youtube vids), then searched for some used examples to find out the real story. I swear by them nowadays, and will likely buy another late 90's MIM Jazz just to have as a "backup".

Dimarzios are my favorite- the older ones are better (to my ears)
