Mine is 74 P bass with DP127 Dimarzio Split Rails- very loud output-- more than any other I have. They have less treble also. This is actually a good thing for Hard Rock music. I wouldn't recommend DP127 for Jazz, or MOR or Pop.

Whats yours?

My favorite bass his a black rectangular thingie with oval ends that has these round very shiny metal pieces in it. Seymour Duncan SCPB3 is the model. Hope that helps.

I would only use that black rectangular thingie in a first generation P-Bass though. It isn't good for much of anything else because it won't fit. It is called a "Quarter-Pounder" sometimes in their marketing, but that is very misleading because they are inedible. (I wonder what they call that pickup when marketing it in countries on the metric system? The Royale with cheese?)

I don't like the split coil SPB3 version of this same Duncan pickup (also sometimes called a "Quarter-Pounder") as much in a second generation bass preferring instead the Fender Original P-Bass Pickup like was used in the discontinued '62 American Vintage Reissue P Bass. To me the Fender is a clear winner in full range tone.

My tonal preferences run to the bright edgy tone where a clear velvety bottom is obviously there yet when I crank the treble knob I want crystal clear upper mids with a distortion free shimmer, twinkle and gleam to them. Not everyone will appreciate having that much available brightness, especially pick players, however for me it is essential. I would not recommend either of the above pickups at all for pick players. But for finger style they work good.

I also like my Wilde by Bill Lawrence balanced P/J passive set but it lacks some in the upper mids and the Lindy Fralin split wound first gen P-Bass pickup is as low heavy as a 83 CBS P-bass, but that is good for certain things. I use both of those some too and they have amazing RFI rejection, but neither of those setups have the voodoo of the Duncan SCPB3 in a first generation P-Bass or the Fender Original P-Bass in a second generation P-Bass.

Never had a bass with Dimarzio pickups but I like hearing them. Being an old man here, I'm pretty well set for life. If I ever did another pickup project I'd try one by Curtis Novak who is by all accounts making some stellar ones now. Since he's right here in NC I'd like to give a home boy some business.

Stock on all. The only mod on any of my basses is a Badass II on my P Special Deluxe. I do use a variety of strings - P Elite II, Dimension gen 1, rounds; P Special Deluxe, T-40, flats; HM, nylons.

Fender Factory Stock Custom Shop on my 2012 American Standard Jazz. This bass is so very good as is that the only thing I change is strings. D'Addarrio EXL-170 Balanced Tension.

Original 1985 Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in the stock position of my 1976 Precision Hot Rod. DiMarzio "Split P's" in the custom routed bridge position. Couldn't ask for a better pairing. Unique & Most Complimentary. Strung with GHS Precision Flats.

If I could afford Fender Custom Shop, I'd have a lefty Dimension IV H, and also something with a TV Jones Thunderblade. Maybe a Gretsch semi-hollow body.

I have the stock pickups in my 2011 American Special Jazz.

My 1985 Fender Japan Jazz is currently in the shop getting Custom Shop 60's pups put in it. I'm pretty darn sure I'm gonna love 'em!

My custom made Precision bass has the old style Fender pups in it, called Originals I think, and a Jazz neck - all Fender parts.

I play the Am Spec Jazz most of the time right now, but I like having choices. It keeps things feeling fresh.

Fender US 57 RI Precision. My favorite split coil. Smooth and punchy.

The pickup in my main recording bass is the stock pickup on a '51RI P-Bass. I have yet to find a reason to change it as it is loud, thumpy and meets my recording needs. :D

On my gigging basses, the main two P-Basses both carry Duncan SPB-1s. Combined with La Bella flats, I couldn't ask for a better live tone. Too good to even describe. :|

True story. Every Classic/Roadworn 50's P I've ever tried, my Classic 70's P, and my FSR Antigua P bass all sound incredible for the money. A far cry from the days of the late 90's when buying a Mexican P bass meant you NEEDED to swap the pick ups. Now it's simply a matter of choice.

Plus, don't forget. The Mexi Mike Dirnt comes with the CS 59 P pick up. A very, very high quality, great sounding pup. My favorite split coil after the 57.

It puzzles me why people still complain about the MIM series basses. I have to assume it's honestly out of ignorance for the most part. Now, don't get me wrong. My 57RI does have a difference in quality you can actually hear. As do the rest of the AVS and CS series pick ups. However, buying a Classic or Artist series Ensenada bass shouldn't be something people should ever feel bad about. Those basses are giggable right out of the box and sound killer. You could buy one of those and play if for decades. No problem.
My Antigua and 70's P did a lot of hard gigging with me in the past few years and I never, ever had an issue with either of them. There are tons of live phone vids of us where you can hear how good those basses sound.

I loved the pup in my 51RI when I had it. I miss that bass terribly. A lot of people go the hot 1/4lb option, or the humbucking stacked coil option. I never found the need to change it. I loved the tone it got. Beautiful when paired with flats.
