I was checking out some bass strings on Youtube. And saw this bass player demonstrating D'adarrio bass strings on his "P" bass. He had this stellartone bass pot on his bass. It is a rotary tone control. Seemed interesting. I wondered if he tone went beyond a regular "P" bass tone control. More brighter highs and deeper lows ??????
Any body have one on their "P" bass?
I recently got a Fender american standard 5 string bass.

I think I'm interested in this product. Just the other day I was thinking...
"How can I tame down the brightness of the treble side of my tone knob?"
A different value pot? A different cap? Doing these things, I presume, would just make a darker, duller tone.
More insight is required. All are welcomed to chime in.

  One way is to do away with all tone controls altogether such as the Chris Aiken and Mark Hoppus basses. Someone here on the forum also hates tone controls.

The tone styler strikes me as an interesting solution to a non-existant problem, and a lot of the advertising copy on their site is tantamount to pure malarkey (that's a technical term).

I like the way you talk....mmmmhmmm....

If Linnin says it's tantamount to malarkey.. then I'm leaning that way. I like the no tone control idea and just use the amp control and experiment with that. It's cheaper too.

One thing is that I had a Hoppus and put a tone control in it but I sold it like the next day- I didn't have time to see if it was a good thing or not. I guess I didn't like the sound of it without a tone control----but that's not unusual because I've never liked the sound of any signature bass I've had--- treble pot or no treble pot. * I have not tried every signature bass there is so I must note that...........

They (whoever) should come up with something to replace a tone pot. Something like a plug in that has a pre-set EQ and modified signal to it. You could have all kinds of them. Just plug one in and have a whole new sounding bass with every plug in. I'm not talking about effects-- more like a bass pod amp tones and whatnot. I know about Electra BTW. Technology is much better today. :)

There is no silver bullet; or secret formula, stompbox, pre-amp, amp, speaker, pick-up, or magic mushroom to good tone.

Eliminate the tone control knob altogether, and eq the amp. What a simple thing to do.
I like the magic mushroom idea too.  :?:

Leo had a G&L SB-2 JP, with just volume controls for the two pups, with no tone control on board. They work well.

I don't have a Stellartone on a P-Bass but I had a short-scale BIRDSONG bass built a few years back; they came with the tone styler as standard, along with Lace Sensor pups and V-V knobs.

It's an interesting option for on-board EQ I think.
Mine is the 6-position rotary; it "defaults" to different tonal centers, and when used in conjunction with adjusting the levels of the bridge & neck pups offers a good range.

Of course, as mentioned, my amp(s) expand EQ greatly, but sometimes I'm happiest when I get the tone I want set Flat!

Silver bullets and 'shrooms etc. all have their place too I think! 8)

Yeah, what do these guys know about tone??!

To the OP:
You " wondered if he tone went beyond a regular "P" bass tone control. More brighter highs and deeper lows ??????"

Hells, yeah- Each of the (6) positions creates a different eq center,in conjunction with the very basic rolling -off treble tone control of a P-Bass.

Would I add it to a Precision? Probably not, as (IMO) the inherent sound from a P-Bass pick-up is what it's all about (on a P-Bass) but as an on-board eq - It's a very valid design.
