Hi, I have seen Fender basses and guitars with and without (mostly without) the little felt pads between the strap pegs and the body. My recently acquired '73 P bass still has most of the original parts but does not have the felt pads. How were these originally issued... with or without the pads?

Most come with the pads. However, if an owner switches to any brand of straplocks, looses the original pads, and then switches back to the original pegs if selling the bass, the pads don't get reinstalled. It has no mechanical function other than as a finish protector where the base of the strap peg hits the body.

Just 20 degrees off subject.....

Pads are readily available in black and white, usually by the dozen. I like using them as I have had issues removing buttons where they had been cranked a little too tight, and the finish came off with. I think the pads give a little buffer, and no one is going to complain since they can be removed in seconds.

I can also remember one instance, with pads in place, where finish came off with one of them. I guess is a gorilla is doing the work, there is no defense.

Biggest thing is to lightly hand tighten. Just snug it up to where the screwdriver stops. While tempting, do not make that last quarter turn. You can always tighten it again if it loosens up, but refinishing a classic Fender....whole different ballgame.

Since almost all of my vintage basses have had other owners, I am not sure about original installation. I have MIA and MIJ basses that have the pads. No clue if they came from the factory. I'm not even sure about my new ones, since I always install pads when I add a strap lock.

Brother Dave has records much more concise than mine. I can find no reference at all as to felt pads being factory installed in vintage instruments.

My 74 P bass did not come with them.

I like them and use them. If there was a reason I would look at it as they are a finish protector maybe kinda. I glue all my strap buttons in with Elmers wood glue. It holds them forever and you can still just unscrew them with no trouble at all anytime. I just fill about 1/2 of the (bottom) threads flush with the outer portion of the thread. That's all it takes. I've not had any come loose.

Thanks for the comments. As I restore my P bass, I am trying to decide if I should add the pads or not. Stroker, are you the original owner of your '74 P bass? What color/finish is it?

I bought the bass in 79. It had 5 years of gigging on it by the looks of it when I got it. It was Sunburst. I refinished it. That was back when it wasn't a big deal to refinish a guitar. The bass is now Surf Green. I play the bass in the band I'm in.

The finish was nitro I think. The body had the "thick skin" coating which was not good. It was really hard to get off. I think the Thick Skin was a poly sealer primer. And it WAS thick. The paint on top of the sealer almost had to be Laquer or super thin poly. The bass was worn exactly like a Nitro finish and after 5 years had arm wear and all the little flaked divits etc. that you could pick with your fingernail. No poly finish I have has ever worn that much in 5 years the way the 74 was when I got it. Poly just doesn't wear that much . It's too hard.

The finish on it now is Poly. It has just enough paint to cover it. It's not a thick paint layer. It has Surf Green primer. The Surf is the second refinish in 1996.

The answer to your question is that Fender basses and guitars do not come with felt pads under the strap buttons.
The US made basses certainly did not come that way in the 1970s and before then. There may have been some felt pads on imported Fenders but most imitated what the USA factory was doing so I suspect not.

I like the idea of the felt pads and i would rec. using them when possible. The only down side is that the felt pad prevents the mounting screw from going into the body that much farther.
