I Need To Have My Bass Setup And Restrung.

I purchased a 2008 Fender American Standard Precision Bass.

It is in new ... Never left the store condition. I am the original owner.

I would like to find someone in Austin, Texas who could setup and restring my Bass with some really good flatwounds.

The fretboard could probably use a good cleaning and conditioning. I think it sat in the store window for a while.

How do I go about finding a good Luthier???

I do not want to take my Bass to Guitar Center and just cross my fingers and hope for the best. I would like to take it to someone who is well known and recommended. Then again ... Maybe I am just an over-protective parent.

 Great question chrisr919, and good thinking too! I should think Austin, Texas would be just teaming with well qualified guitar techs & luthiers. Run a search or use the yellow pages you're bound to find some good people.

What flatwounds are you planning to instal?

I could use some good advice on which flatwound strings to get.

My teacher has them on his bass. They feel and sound really good.

I want to get some that will last a long time.

There is a thread here somewhere on flatwounds, as there are string Q's splashed all over the place. OK here we go -> http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=81712&hilit=GHS+Flatwound

I now have GHS Precision Flats on my '76 Precision, and here's a link to a review I wrote on another forum: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f16/praise-report-ghs-precision-flats-1009326/

Thank You to linnin ......

Both links were very informative. I am leaning toward GHS flatwounds. They seem to have a good reputation.

Within the GHS Precision Flatwound string family it is very important to know there is a lot of difference between the three different basic GHS Precision flat sets. Additionally there are signature GHS flatwound sets that are also different.

The GHS 3025 set is a very light set and can get pretty funky making them good for fusion things. They also make an easy transition set coming from rounds. I love 'em for more modern stuff and while they are very bright sounding they do have a shorter life for me of about 2 months.

The 3050M medium gauge has a a tone approaching old school after a month or so, but at first they are quite lively with immense sustain. A good value string that settles down to be usable for a couple of years.

The 3050 set (sometimes called 3050 REGULAR set) is my favorite set because the tone reminds me a lot of the Labella 760M set, which was the standard string used in the early 60's for a while on Fender P-Basses. The 3050 Regulars sound more old school when new also with no break-in time to get an old school tone. Both the Labella 760 and GHS 3050 Regular sets are SUPER FAT strings and I love the way they sound but the Labella 760M set's ultra high tension is murder on necks. The GHS 3050 Regulars sound close to the Labella 760M's but with lower tension. The Labella 760M and GHS 3050/3050M sets both last a couple of years. Very long legs.

There are MANY other flat sets worth checking out and GHS is not the only option. Lots of people like the D'Addario Chromes while I also like the Thomastik Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats because they are unique sounding for a flat and the only flatwound that personally sound OK with a pick. Still I like the GHS Precision sets better than any other because they are such a good value. In the past I've used some other flats, but GHS and Thomastik Infeld are the flatwounds I use now. I think I was one of the early GHS proponents on the Fender Forum. They are worth trying and not too expensive either. I have never found a roundwound set by GHS I liked much, but I've not tried all their roundwounds. For rounds I have used Thomastik Infeld PowerBass EB344's exclusively for a decade.

Didn't I read on the forum here somewhere that the new Fender
9050L's Flats are good strings with low tension that are neck-friendly?
Are the D'Addario Chromes Light Gauge (flats) low tension?
Notice how I'm really interested low tension...hate adjusting truss rods
with a passion on Vintage reissue Fenders!!!
OH, last question...Do light gauge strings have considerately less tension
than regular gauge? I assume there is an appreciable difference between
light and heavy.

I haven't tried them all but have used several brands of flats and the TI Jazz Flats that Brother Dave mentioned are my favorite. They're expensive but they last a long time and are smooth as butter. They are low tension and easy to play, but will likely require a setup.

The Just Strings site has a tension chart on TI's and some of the other strings, but not all. Might be worth a look.
