Hello,
Sorry for the rudimentary question, but I bought a Fender P-bass off a guy on CL (this is my first American Fender), and I always like to gather as much info as possible regarding the basses I own.

To start with, I'm kind of ashamed to admit that I don't really know which model I have, although I believe it's an American Series. I do not know what wood it is made out of, but I'd like to know that as well. I may not know much about US Fenders, but I got this thing for $500 with a real nice case, and it has surpassed everything else I own - and I really love everything else I own. I have a hard time putting it down.

Some details:
2005 - Serial # Z513xxx (on back of headstock)
Black body w/ B/W/B Pickguard
Maple neck & fingerboard - 20 frets
Truss-rod adjusted at heel
Simple bent bridge (top loading and string-thru-body) with threaded saddles
V/T (no S1 switch - unsure what that is anyway...is this a coil tap?)
"F" Tuners (semi-open gears)
"Fender Corona, California" Neck Plate

If this is an "American Series" can someone explain the difference between that and an "American Standard" back in 2005? Thanks!

05 USA P bass- America standard. Someone put the bridge cover on it and probably the pickguard too. I'm not sure if the 05's had S-1 switching- someone else will know that. My 03 has it. Does it have string thru the body? It should.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, aftermarket bridge cover and pickguard.
No S-1 switch on mine (I'm assuming that the S-1 switch was a push/pull pot).
It does have a string-thru body:

The S-1 you push in on the top of the volume knob (I believe) -the top of the knob goes in and out.Not the whole knob. I uninstalled it on mine.

The other question I have is: What are the indicators that this is an American Standard and not an American Series?

Thanks again for your replies.

American Series is the same as American Standard. It was the name they used until the mid 2000's. My 04-05 is American Series and has the S-1 in the volume knob.

The S1 was introduced in 2003. Removed as of 2008.

So, it looks like I need to loo into a few things on this American Series bass:
- Is this really a 2005?
- Has the S-1 Switch been removed?

Push in on the top of the knob and see if it goes in and out. It's hard to see - I've known of guys who don't know they have S-1 because the top of the knob looks normal. You can always look at the pot(remove guard) - it's different than a regular potentiometer.
Your bass is a 2005.

I sent an email off to Fender asking them for a bit of info on this bass. I got a very quick reply with a great deal of information and factory specs/options for this model. They also included a wiring diagram as well as a function layout diagram. Excellent job!

Mine is a 2005 American Series bass. The B/W/B pickguard might be original as it was an option for that year. Mine also came from the factory with an S-1 Switch, but it has been removed by the previous owner. Alder body.

Thanks for all the help and responses.

Fender sold the American Series from 2000 until the reintroduction of the American Standard in 2008. The American Series was equipped with an S-1 switch from 2003 to the end. The S-1 switch was a push-on/push-off switch on the top of the volume control which connected the split-coil pickups in series (conventional) or in parallel.

That bridge cover is not original equipment. Your 2005 American Series bass should have an S-1 switch. Purists/collectors would want it as it was original equipment. From a playing perspective, you won't miss it. It was no big deal. It's a great bass and is best when not using the S-1 switch.

The American Series was, more or less, the equivalent of the American Standard. There was no American Standard sold during that period. The names are virtually synonymous. You can't get a 2005 Fender American Standard bass but many people may call it that anyway because they are pretty much the same line. Some call the combination "American Standard Series."
