Wanting to get a P-Bass I can live with (I am a Jazz guy who only likes Jazz necks), I came across this Special Edition Fender Deluxe PJ Bass (MIM).

This is the model only made for Guitar Center. It sports a Jazz neck that looks just like the neck on my '72 Jazz....way cool!

It also sports a Badass bridge and a Fender Noiseless Jazz pickup near the bridge. Now I did buy this for that P-Bass tone, and with that Jazz PU off, it nails it. Adding the Jazz PU in is like a bonus, handy if I plan to do some slapping and soloing.

The bass is fairly light, I say no more then 9 lbs. But like allot of Fenders, it needed some serious TLC out of the box!

The action was horribly high and there was a bad fret buzz on the upper frets even with the high action. BUT....I know I can solve all that!

First, put in a shim to angle the neck up a bit (boy I must say the neck pocket was super tight). That cured the fret buzz. Than did some tweaking of the truss rod. And the result....still crap! Only kidding!

It plays great now! Got the action pretty low and no fret buzzes. Than tore off the crappy strings that came on it and put on a fresh set of DR Low Rider Round Wounds (I know all you die hard P-Bass guys are going to say put on flats...but I prefer the sound of rounds) and it is sounding pretty darn good.

I am sure I'll have to tweak the neck again as it settles in. But I think it will be a keeper for a while. The only thing is, that plain white pickguard I think will have to go (ordered a Pearl White one)! But other than that it is a cool looking bass....Seafoam Green!

Either genuine Fender or try WD Music.

I already tried both of those. None seem to have the PGs for the MIM Deluxe P-Basses. Just the American Deluxe series.

WD will custom make just about anything you want. I'd call rather than just surf.

Plus there are many options for personalization:

You could also pay a local artist to use your exisiting plain white pick guard as a blank canvas for an exciting new one-of-a-kind artwork! :D

Or get a body shop to shoot it a color you like.

Of course there's always stickers and/or decals.

It looks like the same PG as on the active Deluxe P Bass Specials... *I* would order what I wanted from Warmoth, without any holes for the controls - then use the original for a template to make holes in the new one... I'd trace out the proper locations, drill a pilot hole, then use a step drill to size them...

My one and only experience with WD Music was terrible - I wouldn't recommend them to anyone...

Buy a genuine Fender P-Bass pickguard and drill an extra hole for the neck pickup volume!

You can also drill a hole in the lower bout for a side-mounted jack and replace the top-mounted ferrule with the master tone pot.

Personally I would opt for a master volume, pan and tone to keep things simple.

I found a place that makes them for that bass as well as almost any bass, Terrapin Guitars. Also a good half the price of the Fender PGs.

Ended up going with a White Pearl. Should look sharp!

We expect a couple of pics with the new guard.

Well the white shell pickguard would suit better a gold-plated hardware! :P

Did you try to tweek the rod and let it sit for a day before you put a shim in it? It's odd that it would need a shim being as it's so new . Maybe it just had a high fret. Either way- nice bass. I like the color. :D

I like the sound of the bass .I like the way the round wounds give you that nice ringing tone. It's the only way to go !!! Boogie On !!!

The bass was suffering from heel swell, common problem with bolt-ons. Seen it allot on Fenders.....down here in Florida at least. The heel of the neck swells so that the upper frets are not level with the rest of the neck. When I got the bass, the action was super high. And even with the high action, it still had fret buzz on the upper frets. Thus the reason for the shim.

I think the neck has pretty much settled in from my truss rod adjustments. The bass is now playing great! The shim really helped. I have the action nice and low with no fret buzz.

The shame part is and happens allot, anyone trying out the as I received from Guitar Center probably would have started trashing it and Fender saying how bad it plays. Lucky for me I can look past that and see every issue is fixable.

Well here she is sporting the new pearl pickguard. Way better then the plain white one that came with the bass.
