Well .... I spose they were stock Fenders? The data sheet on your bass will say which strings they were.

I'm astonished that bassists bust strings! Or is it that I'm just an old bloke? (53!!)

Never bust a bass string in my life. I use Thomastics on all my basses. They're too bl**dy expensive to break. LOL!!

Ease off sir!

John

Are you serious? Ive never broken a string on my bass before, and the only time I have ever witnessed this was on an old squir p-bass that had its same stock strings for 6 years. It had an e string which had been so worn, it was grinded to the core at the 5th fret, but we TRIED to break it, not ly. What kinda music were you playing man? Anyways, theres another post that I had earlier this week that had people tell their opinions on strings, so if you need info look there. anyways, keep on playing.

I dont know how people break their strings because you can pick up a bass by its strings and they wont snap. I recommend DR HiBeams, 45-105

The strings you use will depend the sound you want. I use DR Flatwound for one type or sound and DR rounds for another. I do like the flats.

Go with DR's! I use LongNecks on my warwick and Hi-Beams on the P-Bass.
They're hand wound and best of all they're compression wound, so you get more metal in each string. They will last a heck of alot longer, stay in tune a lot easier, and they're stainless wont eat frets.

Also, you may want to inspect your bass where the string broke. Something must have caused it to break. I firstbass I had, had a bur in one of the sadles and I went through 2 A strings before I figured it out. Sounds dumb I know, but I have seen worse.

I use Zachary Optimum Gauges, have had 3 sets of them now and I love them! They're relatively cheap (for me I buy them from the guy in the US and have them posted - all in all its cheaper than going to my local music store and buying a set of badly gauged strings).

Link: http://www.zacharyguitars.com/Strings.htm

You have to email the guy personally if your local store doesn't do 'em. The explanation is a bit...in your face and seems arrogant but he has a point.

You could buy other strings seperately in similar gauges I suppose but its less convenient.

Seriously? It reads like it was written by and for some washed up hairbag who still plays in metal cover bands and is bitter that he never got a deal. The fact that he goes out of his way to bash a 7.25 fingerboard radius, and calls it unplayable is amusing. Maybe he needs even graduated tension to help compensate for the fact that he can't actually play all that well?

As far as his theory, and the strings. The idea itself is interesting and has merit. However, I've never had a problem with the uneven tension of strings on any of my P's or any guitar making anything I wanted to play unplayable. More importantly, it sounds they way I like.

I guess if tension is a serious thorn in someone's side then these would be a great idea. However, until I read that page, I never knew there was a problem. So I must be an idiot.

In the end, I'd think a more proffesional sales pitch might help his cause.

(I thought you were talking about my post. not the webpage)
I agree but I gave his strings a bash anyway (hell they were cheap) and to be fair they feel a lot nicer to play. Tone wise I can't say I notice a huge difference.

I only read partial bits anyway, most of it is like you say a bit childish.

Wow! You must have been rockin! I play about 300 gigs a year and have never broken a string. You are the man.
The gauge was most likely 105-45. I guess i should say get another set of fenders since this is a Fender page, but i wont. Personally, i like Diadarrio, but i just recently tried Curt Mangin strings. Really nicely balanced but they dont really last any longer than anything else. The coated strings are cool when you get used to the slippy feeling, but, be warned, your caluses will get soft. I tried them because when you play as much as i do, you get sick of changing the things all the time. They do last about three times as long, but, for the price, nah! Two nights ago i put on a set of Diadarrio stainless and it was like playing barb wire! Ouch!
Maybe you should try a 50 on the bottom. Its pretty brutal on the fingers but man does it sound balsy!

I once broke an E string.

In the past I used DRs and was pretty happy. Then I started using Curt Mangan and eventually became a sponsored artist. I love their strings. I find the tone to be better than DR and they last just as long. They do not sell to mass merchandisers such as Guitar Center but are available at some smaller stores. You can also buy them direct on their website for about 1/3 of what you would pay in a store.
