I am doing some work on a P79 and I noticed it has two different pups. DCR output reads 12k at the output jack.

Looks like these two are completely different. Any info about it?

The treble cover does not go off easily so I didn't ever bother removing it. Might cause more trouble than necessary :) The bass coil is 7k, the treble coil is 5.6k. That's weird.

Thanks!

The E&A string pickup looks like a Seymour Duncan SPB-3 with the original Fender cover over it instead of the Duncan cover. The large diameter poles are the hallmark I'm going by to say that. Some custom pickup makers, or at least Lindy Fralin anyway, are using larger poles now too on special orders, but none have been using them long enough to look that aged except Duncan.

The treble pickup has the typical Fender 6 digit stamp on the back but I can not make out what the numbers actually are for sure, but it looks like there are 6 numbers which would be correct for a Fender factory pickup of this era. (In a Fender 6 digit pickup code the first two numbers are the pickup maker's ID. 2nd two numbers are the week it was wound. Last 2 are the last 2 digits of the year it was wound. On this one it looks like the next to last digit is a 7, but can't tell what that last digit is.

This is an odd arrangement to say the least. I'm sure someone had good reason for doing that, but I never saw it before.

Hmmm...That would certainly give you a lot of oomph and rattle on the low end, but keep things thinner and trebly for soloing up high. Though I can't imagine how the transition between the two pickup would sound smooth in a run that uses any combination of the E and A with the D and G. Unless the person purposely did all his chord based runs and walks down low to sit in the mix and then just transitioned to the D and G strings for solo work. Seems to kind of paint you into a corner, but it's definitely interesting!

I just cleaned, rewired and reinstalled it. I'll try it out tomorrow, I have to make a string nut first, the neck is freshly refretted. This pup configuration might even work very well, because the original cover sits higher and this in turn means when both covers are leveled, the weakest pup is the closest one to the strings.

Here's another thing, sponge material underneath the pups deteriorated completely. Does it have anything with off-gassing of some sort? Judging by the patina and stickyness of the finish I think this body might be nitro (the neck however is polyester + nitro headstock), but I am not sure.

What was the pickguard material used in that period? Probably not celluloid?

The pick guard on a '79 was plastic, not celluloid.

The original foam that served to act as a spring under the pickup was black weather stripping like they sell at Sears.

Somebody screwed around with that bass.

I hope it works well for you when you get it back together.
