Just took the plunge a few weeks ago on a used Fender AVS 57 RI. Got it for less than a new American Standard. Blows the doors off anything I've ever played. If you like vintage tone and specs and can handle a little patience. The used market isn't too bad. Judging by the American Standards I've played and my AVS I'd say the quality is worth the price difference anyhow. The price difference is gone or negligible if you pick up a used one. Even a demo can get you a couple hundred knocked off. This plays and sounds like a P should.

My AV57P is my primary bass. Good buy.

I like it so much and I'm so happy with the deal I got I'm selling my other two Precisions and might pick up another. (I was going to sell them anyhow) Originally I had contemplated looking for a used Custom Shop first generation Precision. However, I'm so in love with this I'm actually thinking about sitting on the money until I happen across and older AVS 57RI in a custom color. I seem to remember them being talked about quite a bit on the FDP years, and years ago. I've seen a couple out there for sale on line. The prices are about Custom Shop level, but neither really struck my fancy. One was Fiesta Red, and the other was CAR. I know they did some in a couple other colors. So I think I'm just going to have to be patient until I find the right bass.

Well as far as American Standard VS AVRI/AVS/Road Worn ETC, It is a personal preference. You obviously like vintage specs but Fender has evolved and the American Standard P of today IS what a Precision sounds and feels like TODAY.

Having said that...... I would take an AVRI or Road Worn or Classic Precision any day of the week over an American Precision for tone. IMO, yes that is what I expect a Precision to sound like.

It is the necks on the American Standards that appeal to me over the vintage necks....in part. I love vintage sized frets and 7.25" radius(AVRI,AVS,Road Worn etc) but love 'artificially rolled edges'(American Standard).

It is cool to have a pure vintage spec'd bass but I just don't jive with those wider necks. I have a '51 Reissue I made more spec correct by adding pressed fiber-like saddles and the correct vintage capacitor/electronics and a custom wound pickup. While I love the vintage correct specs, it does not make it to sessions and only occasionally makes it to live gigs.

Still the bass I grab most times out of about 10 I own is the Road Worn P because of the tone. Beats my American Standard, in my opinion.

What I am considering with my American Standard is pulling the Custom Shop pup and throwing in an 'Original '62' or whatever is in the Road Worn.

As far as necks go I still say the first generation 50's Precisions had the best specs. At least for me. Thick, but not wide. Though not too skinny, either. A nice fat B width neck with a 7.25" radius to me is still what I consider the ideal. I really agonized over spending this kind of money on myself. Which is really silly I suppose given the amount I gig. However, when it came down to it I paid 200 more for my barely used 57 than for a Roadworn. Which is a pretty sweet deal. As you said, what we like is subjective. My local shop has a 2 tone burst roadworn that plays like an absolute dream. It's insanely light, but well balanced, too. A really nice bass. I have to be honest. Had it been Fiesta Red I would have likely walked out with it already.

+1 on the Roadworn Precision.

I have one in Fiesta red and it sounds great.

That is a sweet deal for the 57. Aother thought rattling around in my head is to sell my AS Precision and maybe one of my Jazz basses and pick up an AVRI 57.
I would like to try one first though. I have never heard a bad review on one of these yet! Gotta re-think my setup since that Road Worn came into the stable.

So, I have an American Deluxe P-Bass and a Blacktop P-Pass (MIM).

I love the Blacktop - easy to play, good tones and well made.

The Blacktop hasn't got the thumping low end of the Deluxe and the Blacktop won't keep its price, but makes up for it in playability and tones - it is like like an awesome pair of old jeans.

I am very happy with my MIM Blacktop and there many examples of where I will choose it over the Am Dlx P-Bass.
