Hi, I have been playing guitar for a long time, and my favorite axe: my Mexican strat. I could have gotten an American deluxe, but the mexican sounded and looked great (I'm talking about both the guitar and the price). I have been playing bass for not as long, but I've figured that I have graduated from the squire jazz bass I've been playing. I really want a p bass now. I went to guitar center, and all they had were squires and American vintages (the American vintage 63 p bass is heaven btw, but I'm not looking to spend that much). I am wondering, was I lucky with my mexi strat, or are all fenders similar from Mexican to American? I would love to save money and go with the Mexican standard p bass, but I don't want to sacrifice quality so I'm happy to go with the American standard. Please give me your thoughts.

Fender, including Squiers, has been producing some very good basses the past view years, but there are differences. Not just in the wood used, but in the hardware and electronics as well.
For a mass production passive bass, it's hard to beat the American Standard line. If you like active electronics, then the American Deluxe line is the way to go. The MIA's will also hold value better than Squiers, MIM's and other basses produced overseas by Fender.
The best thing to do is check out all the basses you can. If your not worried about re-sale value, then forget about the decal on the headstock. Find the one that feels, sounds and plays great to you.

The MIM basses are very good and cheap in comparison to the MIA ones.

MIM basses are fine. Many upgrade the electronics and still save money compared to an MIA. When it comes time to sell, it is still an MIM, if that is important to you.

I like the MIAs, and unless money is a real issue, I would go with the real deal. MIAs can had for $500-$700 in excellent used condition, too. I own several an have no complaints with any of them.

Honestly, your best bet is to get an MIM Classic series Bass. They are quality instruments, have upgraded specs so you won't need to bother with upgrades, and are giggable. My Classic 70's P is easily on par with my actual old 78 in both quality and tone. The only upgrade I did was a Bad $@! II bridge which was simple a matter of choice. The stock bridge was fine. If I had to recommend one P bass, and one P bass only. For tone, quality, and price it would be without question the Classic or Roadworn 50's P bass. You won't find a better bass for that money. Or honestly for more than that. I would play a 50's P before I would ever play an American Special. (which are nice instruments, but don't play anything like a P bass should, imo)

If you can do the price tag on the American Standard Precision, do yourself a favor and get the Am. Std. Precision. They are worth it.

I'm with linnin on this one. It is in my sights. I'd be really happy with an American Standard, but a RI would be fantastic!

The RIs are very nice, I have a couple. My wife gave me the AV57P in my pic and it quickly became my primary bass.

I'd look for an American Special Precision, only because I don't care for the non traditional Hipshot's you get with the American Standard.

I don't think the 2013-2014 Am. Std. come with tapered Hipshot any more. They're labeled Fender now. I'll take the tapered tuning keys anytime. That's the least of part that I care about when playing an Am. Std. P, or J Bass. I still think an Am. Spl. Bass costing as much as they do, should be presented in a case, not a gig bad, and have a High Mass Bridge to either string above straight through, or through the body. Just my opinion.

When I pull the trigger, it will depend on how much i have in the G.A.S. Fund at that moment.

As I said, how much is in the fund. $1999.99 vs. $1249.99. I think the Standard will win out.

Stay tuned!
