As I said, I went to Guitar Center yesterday. I was hoping to try one of the new Squier fretless Precision's, of course they didn't have any, but that's a different story. Their stock of fender basses was low, only one American standard Precision, an American Standard jazz, a hand rubbed stain Precision which was ugly, a couple MIM's and a few Modern players. Looked like their entire stock of everything in the store was down. One good thing came of it, I finally met a salesman there who knew what he was talking about. Really! He knew his stuff anf actually played! :D Most of you will know what I'm talking about.

I did get another Fretrest stand. They are my favorites as they hold a Jazz like a hand in a glove and do't tip over.

Now I'm able to leave my VM Jazz out. I haven't played it in a few months and forgot just how much I liked it. If you've never tried one, give it a shot, you may be surprised.

I fully understand what you mean about the staff at some GC's. The one in OKC is like that.
Maybe inventory is down because of the time of year? It is inventory time for lots of businesses.
It's about time! The VM Jazz needed it's own stand. Show a little Squier respect!

I think most serious musicians are usually disappointed by GC. Lack of stock, bad setups, lack of knowledgeable staff, etc. I only buy from them if they have exactly what I want and for the right price.

I agree. I won't buy instruments there, but I'll buy other things that come pre-packaged, like the stand I mentioned, strings on sale, etc.

Sometimes they get some interesting used stuff - I scored a '68 Guild Starfire I Bass at the Sacramento GC for a very reasonable price, and my Duck Dunn Signature came from the Concord, CA GC, which I also got on a very reasonable trade. But most of the time that place really bugs me!

Nice stand by the way - I have a couple of A frames but usually the hook part (bad description I know) gets in the way of a cable if it's plugged in.

I will stop into a GC to check out their used gear, you never know.

This is my favorite stand. It holds all very well, especially the Jazz Basses. I've never had them tip over.

GC blows except for when they have something I have to have. They play music in there (store music) that is so loud it kind of messes up my buying experience thing. I could never stay there for more than an hour. That's about as long as I ever need to be there. I can't imagine working there and hearing that all day. That along with all different guitar licks going on at the same time. :(

The only thing that I would do any major purchases from GC would be Markbass Amps. And at that, I'd probably order something on line.

I bought pretty sweet used stuff from them, its true though the last time was complicated because they really don't care to know or to check their inventory.

The staff at the OKC GC leaves alot to be desired, but the kids that come in playing the guitars at loud volumes is enough to make me leave as soon as possible. They may not be bad players, but when you have 4 or 5 going at the same time.......playing different songs........
I have checked out a few basses there and they were in pretty decent shape. Set up wasn't too bad at all.
I don't get up there often since they are about 120 miles from where I live, but in the last 3 years I bought two used amps. A Peavey Max 115 bass amp for $159 (use at band rehearsal) and a Peavey VYPYR 75W Modeling Amp for $179 (use at home). Both prices include a 1 year warranty ($20 each) which I never had reason to use.
During one trip I found some Fender nickel-plated steel strings for my Strat on sale. I believe I paid $8.39 including tax for 3 sets and a Fender baseball. :D

120 miles is nothing in OK. The roads are all straight. Just stomp it and go!!! I spent a long time driving thru Oklahoma on my way to and from CA. . The weather is big in Oklahoma. I have cousins in Tulsa.

The staffs at GC-- it's weird that I've never seen what looks like a manager at a GC. I think he stays in a room an only allows audience occasionally to his lowly crew.
I most always have to explain why I need a certain this or that so the salesperson knows how to look for what it is I'm talking about. "Threaded saddles", I say. "What is it?" he says. " A leather guitar strap", I say. :D

Went to GC looking for strings and not finding what I wanted. I explained it to the sales associate. He referred me to Bass Pro Shop store next door.

Okay, maybe it wasn't that bad, but I always seem to come up empty, stock is never good at my local (smaller) store.

I wish I had a Bass Pro Shop nearby, I hear they're great! Pretty funny, the manager of the one GC up here sits in a little office too.

I have one of those baseballs with the strings, somewhere near the same price. Got to get one of those ball holder things.

I guess I'll be the one to stand up for Guitar Center.

I have bought multiple used basses from them and I can't complain.

I have gotten great deals from GC.

You can always check their used inventory online!

The store staff is mostly younger guys and they can't know as much as I do because i have been playing bass for 45 years and I have built my collection over the same time.

As long as a sales person does not try to B.S. me I am OK with them needing to learn more about their products.
