Hey gang,

Been awhile. I've been gigging my FSR Antigua P (and my Classic 70's P) steadily. All is good with the bass functionally. However, on stage someone setting up a drum kit knocked into the bass and the pickguard cracked and peeled down by the jack. Not really a big deal normally as the bass itself wasn't hurt. However, it dawned on me... where the h*ll am I going to get a replacement for this?! So, does anyone know of anyone who does a good aftermarket replacement? I'm assuming that Fender doesn't offer one. Or even one of the custom guys who might be able to make one as a one off? I've got plenty of guards lying around that would fit, but I'm not sure I'd like the antigua finish with a non-matching guard.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

KoP

Nice, I thought about WD, but wasn't sure they'd mess around with Antigua. If so, the simplest thing would likely be to swap out to one of my B/W/B guards temporarily and then send them the original. Thanks! I'll contact them and see if they are willing to do that.

That pickguard has to have a part number. If you find out the part number you can order it through authorized dealer or service center. This is a FSR but they made so many of them they really aren't that scarce and likely there is a part number for it. Remove the guard and see if there is a part number sticker on the back. If so, "BINGO!"

Also watch eBay for chop-shop sellers like Stratosphere parting one out.

I didn't think to go the part number route, Dave. Thanks! Maybe I should just call customer service? My only worry there is there seems to be a HUGE difference in the way these basses look. Which is really cool as it makes them more individual, but also a little difficult to replace the guard on them. I've seen some that are basically grey, some that are very green, and others right in between. Worth a try, though. Great idea! I did check the evil bay, and nothing yet. Always great advice, man!

The reason they look different is the pickguards are airbrush painted so no two guards are exactly identical but the color used is the same on all of them. The hue of the color to get the Antigua effect has changed at least three of times. The first Fender Antigua was introduced on the 1968 Fender Coronado and it had one hue. When the color was added as a Custom Color option on the rest of the line it appeared a slightly different hue to me but was really close to the Coronado and it might have just been the way it was applied. Antigua was discontinued and then revived about 1977/78 with more of a greenish hue before being discontinued again. Finally for the recent reissues it appears to have gone much grayer. So the guards are not interchangeable among the various runs. There also was a Fender Japan Antigua hue.

I really think you are going to wind up getting an aftermarket parchment guard and have an airbrush artist custom match the paint color and airbrush the parchment guard to be as close to your original as possible. The best color reading on a color matching/mixing computer will come from the darkest part of the body finish as the darkest parts of the guard might be too narrow to get a reliable reading.

The guard really needs three layers of spray. A Poly primer needs to be applied first to insure even application and permanent adhesion of the color layer. Second the airbrushed color layer. Third a clear matte finish needs to be applied evenly over the entire dried color layer of the guard to protect it, otherwise the color layer will wear right off. Any good airbrush artist with color matching capability could do it. Most of them do much harder more involved graphics free-handed so this won't be much of a challenge.

SPECIAL NOTE: Use extreme care when removing or installing any Antiqua guard. Since they are painted it is easy to chip the color around the screw holes so use the smallest screwdriver that fits the screws properly. Some people report that on the recent reissues no matter how careful they were that the color layer around the pickguard's screw holes will sometimes chip or flake off when the screw is removed. The only reason I can think of for this happening (other than using a too large screwdriver or using one carelessly) is because at some point after the guard was installed it got another thin shot of clear matte as protection. If that was the case, when you start removing the screw which also has some clear matte on it that it can lift the color layer until the clear matte covering the screw or built up around the screw edge breaks free. This doesn't happen on all of them, but it is not unheard of. To minimize the likelihood of that happening it might be a good idea to take any small sharp pointy object like a large needle and very carefully run the pointy end around the outer edge of the screw to pre-break any clear matte that might be present all the way around the outside edge of each and every pickguard screw.

Great info, Dave! Thanks! After looking around the web I've seen I'm not the only person who has run into this problem with either a P or J. So I'll be sure to update this with whatever I find out until I get a resolution one way or another. That way anyone else who has one of these will be able to research it easier. I love this bass. Both it and my Classic 70's P got used on every gig while I had them strung with rounds. However, since string this bass with flats it's taken on a whole new life even better than before. It really sounds and plays like a dream. I easily put it up there in terms of tone and playability with the Classic series models. It's a whole lot of bass for the money.

Update: WD cannot do an antigua guard. Unfortunately I sent FMIC an email from work forgetting I have both Friday and Monday off. :? SO it'll be a few days before I know what their response is. There was someone on Facebook I got a guard from for my Gretsch 5120. I'm not sure if he does true custom work or not. I'll try him too. If I find anyone who will do it, or get one from FMIC I'll let you all know.

FMIC will not sell a replacement guard. It's been a bit of a struggle getting info from them. Last correspondence I informed the rep that I'd need to find a custom artist to do it. So I asked him if he could find out anything about their process. What guard they start with. Paint color codes, clear coats, application order, ect. Hopefully I'll hear something back by Monday.

Until then I have resolved to swap the guard out with a B/W/B guard when I do a set up again. Then wait until I get the info and contact I need to get one done custom.

Maybe if you get really hard up and can't find a Pick guard you could find an airbrush artist to do it for you. Kind of like Horny Mike on Counting Cars. Those dudes are out there. I see one at the flea market and he paints like Vermeer or something. A good artist can match the color no swet. They might not even charge you much.

I figure that's how it'll go down. However, I'm determined to try and get as much info out of FMIC as possible that way anyone else who runs into it will be able to search here and find the info they need. If I can spare someone else the pain in the $@!, and give the artist a leg up on how they were originally done why not, right?
