Hey all. I recently purchased a Fender precision 60th anniversary (2011) for a steal of a deal at a somewhat local guitar center. It was the burst version (limited to about 125 special run).

In the store I thought the transition from black to yellow (?) was sorta reddish, but paid it no mind. I got it home and realized the black of the burst is actually a deep purple (no band reference intended...)

I was curious if anyone else has seen this. It's got the "thin skin" nitro finish. It is too consistent to be faded from the sun - it's beautifully even and on the front and back. I contacted Fender who confirmed the serial number is in fact a a GC special run burst 60th anniversary. He also confirmed that none of these basses were done in purple or any variation thereof. (I knew that as there was only the blonde version and the special burst for guitar centers). In a follow up, the customer service rep said that it was probably from exposure to flourescent bulbs but this cant be the case for two reasons: 1 - I took the pickguard off to look and it is a nice rich purple just as it is on the front and back and 2 - wouldn't many more black Fenders be purple?

Has anyone else seen this on this bass or any other Fenders? Is this a normal phenomenon or a rare anomaly off the line?

Me too, James. I guess that's what makes the 'special burst' special. I'll bet 'Purple Haze' sounds particually psychadelic when played on that bass.

Not saying I dislike it. In fact, I think it looks pretty sweet. I'm just curious...

I think the purple hue that you are seeing is just a result of the combination of the red, yellow and brown colors used to make the sunburst.

I think the bass is beautiful and I would love to play that sucker under some good stage lights.
That bass looks fantastic!

I am not a real sunburst fan, but that is really quite cool. Not just the color, but the whole package.

Would that mean they forgot the black?
