I read somewhere about when they got the tuners originally they just mounted them and after a while they started routing for the tabs. But that would have been early on- not in 57. So I still think there's the possibility this is all a good excuse for production reasons. But what the heck- mine are flush and I route when I put a set of vintage style tuners on a neck. I like the 27 to 1 ratio and the reverse action. They are good for getting "fine tuning ".

I'll upload a pic later of the 51 tuning machines they look almost exactly like your Sting Bass. Stay Tuned Campers. There is an Arch to them between the mounting screws.
I'll take a couple Detailed pics and post them here.

They didn't route the back of the headstocks on the Stings so the plate will look arched. Same with the old basses untill they started routing a divot so the plates would fit down flush. My Sting has the divots but someone must have done it before I bought it.

This thread is getting interesting! Anyone got pics of the CS 51's and 55's tuners? I'd be interested to see if they are period correct and have the arch.

OK so I took pics up close and personal of the tuning machines on the 1951 P, It is ORIGINAL... for sure, I also took pics of the tuning machines on my Mexican Jazz...
it is substantially newer, the headstock is not routed (I don't claim to be an expert in any way, but I have never SEEN one with routed inlets on the back of the headstock...
The MUCH newer Mexican standard Jazz machines are also surface mounted and NOT arched. They are also Kluson Open Style.
My only other bass to compare too is a 2000 or 2001 Hotrod P...
It has sealed machines...

JUST so everyone knows===

VINTAGE TUNERS have tabs on the inside of the plate that are folded over to secure the tuner post ( NOT THE BARREL) === Once the tabs are folded over in the mfg. process they ARE NOT flush with the under side of the plate. They protrude out about 3/32nds approx. or so. This causes the plate to NOT completely come in contact with the flat wood of the back of the headstock.

MODERN TUNERS are not the same as the vintage REVERSE 27 to 1 ratio tuners. Modern tuners do not have the tabs protruding from under the tuner plate. They lay flat in the back of the headstock.

VINTAGE style tuners are still available and they are reverse wind and they have the tabs. To install them flush a small scooped out hole must be made where the tabs come in contact with the back of the headstock. IF YOU DON"T make the small scooped out hole==== when the tuner is screwed in (without the scoop) the tuner plate bends into what can be called an "arch".

I myself consider it a minor flaw. The old basses had the arched bent tuner plates from installation. AFTER a period of time the scooped out area was added so the plate is not arched/bent. All that was back in the day.

A great post SV. That makes a lot of sense for why it looks buckled, or bent. 8) :mrgreen:

Thanks MrNylon- I know I've read about the old tuners a few times. I read a lot of books etc... I could post where I originally read it but that would take a whole lot of search time in a short attention span World (if you catch my drift). :roll:
