I agree that a split-coil Precision should be very quiet without shielding.

I once bought a Precision that hummed like crazy and I couldn't find the problem,
until I decided that one of the pickup halves was wired incorrectly.
Once I swapped the leads and tested it- It was pure tone and no hum at all.

This was a Seymour Duncan replacement pickup that appeared to have been the original wiring. Mistakes do happen.

I'm interested in knowing what's up with the bass. If he figures it out and tells us then it will be good info to know. I've always been able to figure out stuff with help from guys on here.. AND I've experienced the pickups being wired backward like BC points out.

Ok after getting back on here I went back and worked on the bass, I put in a diff set of pups new pots, cap, and jack. Well it still does it its just a lite buzz and if you touch the bridge, strings, keys, knobs it stops and if you tap on them you can hear it.....but if you touch the pup mount screw the thing goes crazy with a loud buzz?? It does that with both sets of pups, pots, cap, and jack. Now I have rewired numerous basses so I know what I 'am doing but this is got me.

Well that's a very obvious ground issue. Did you pull the bridge and replace the ground wire?

Okay, this may sound stupid. However, have you troubleshot the rest of the circuit? I've had plenty of splitcoils. Some hummed a little. (cheaper ones likely with shoddy soldering) Some were perfectly quiet. Now my 57 Reissue has always been perfectly silent. We were about to record a track for my new band and the engineer was plugging everything in. Went back to the headphones and said "Dude, you're humming." We lifted the ground on the amp. Nothing. Turned out it was a cable. I mean, it's been a looooonnnggg time. So I doubt you're still using the same cable and maybe not even the same head. However, if you've tried it with different pick ups and still get it. Then either the tone circuit isn't wired properly, both sets of pick ups are bad, or it's not the bass.

linnin everything has been replaced. KOP, the pups that are in it now came out of another bass I had it never made a sound so did the pots, cap, and jack. I play the Duck bass using the same amp and cable all is good. Like I said at the top of the post I have read somewhere a guy had a new Mike Dirnt bass and it hummed new the same way this one does. None of the other basses I have built or moded has giving me trouble like this one :)

OK this is tough one that calls for drastic measures. You're going to have to go all Jimi Hendrex on that big humming $@!&*! Douse it in Ronsonol and light it up with a Zippo.
Dance around in circles chanting "Die Humming $@!&*, Die". After your problem has been reduced to ashes, plug it in and see if it still hums.

You have reversed the polarity on one half of the pickup so that it is no longer hum-cancelling but hum-adding.
I know you feel confident in your installation, but something is wrong if you are getting that much hum.

Sometimes P- bass pickup leads can get bisected by their mounting screws. Sometimes a pickup half is connected incorrectly so that the Split PU acts as a giant single coil pickup and it will be very noisy.

Have it checked out by a pro who will look at it with a fresh set of eyes and ears.
Good Luck with it.
