Hi... seasons greetings!

Just wondered if anyone had seen/played one of these at all? Not sure what the significance is of 1964 in the history of the Precision?

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PBass64HRB3CS

Also, (probably a daft question) what are the main differences when it comes to a Custom Shop Fender vs. a Made in the USA Fender - I've got an image of skilled artisans painstakingly crafting an individual instrument... and that's just the Made in the USA models!

Thanks in advance..

I watched this video on YouTube a few days ago, about Squier vs Fender (standard/special) vs Custom shop.
Granted, this video pertains to guitars, not sure how accurate the info in it is for Bass, but I definitely learned more than I know now by watching it.

It's a bit long - but I love watching these guys' videos.

Thanks for that, much appreciated.

That's a really good/interesting video. Andertons have a good reputation over here.

I tried the '64 Custom Shop P-bass (not at Andertons) and ended up buying it. Really blown away by the bass - sound, neck, look, playability all superb. The relic job is tastefully done and looks 'natural'. The bass just oozes class.

Seriously considering a '64 Custom Shop Jazz.

LOVE the look of that CS relic. I assume that neck feels dreamy?

The neck feels lovely - especially nice finish on the back where lacquer has been removed in places to give it that proper worn feel.

It's not a direct copy in the way that the AV basses are - no strap button on the back of the headstock for instance (a tiny point but worth mentioning nonetheless) - but to me it looks and feels like a '64 period bass, and sounds fabulous.

If I were to offer a minor quibble it would be that, whilst the majority of the bass has been relic-ed (and really tastefully so), the chrome covers have the appearance of being new; ditto the two chrome knobs. As I say, this really is a minor quibble for what is a lovely instrument.

Hugely impressed.

Interesting about those covers. On the Sweetwater site the covers do not look spankin' new. I would think the Custom Shop would relic those parts properly.

If you are interested, I have relic'd covers like that before by lightly sanding the surface then putting PCB etching solution on the parts. You can get that solution for cheap at Radio Shack. I use an old container with just enough solution to cover the surface of the part. Let sit for 10 minutes or less and rinse completely. Instant 50 years of weathering!!

I have done this many times on a variety of parts. If you do not want to make the parts look too worn, you just pull them out of the solution sooner. You can also paint the solution on with an old brush.

I love the look of that relic you have there. Good luck.
