I looked thru the USA bass guitars and did not see the Fender P bass that has the p j set up and looks like a vintage vibe Squier- with the 51 style pickguard. I don't know the USA name for it. I think it came out in 2011???
The other bass in question is the Dimension bass. Anyone know anything about these two basses-- enough to give a review-- any hands on experience with one of the two- an honest opinion of sound? Do they kick butt like a USA P or J? Which pick up combo sounds the best on the Dimension?

 I would leap at the chance to own a lefty Dimension without ever seeing or playing one in person :!: :!: :!: 8) This is a must own bass.

It appears that there is little interest in the two basses I was questioning about. :D I feared the worst when I heard a soundbite on some Youtube thing or something. Granted the sound of Computer speakers isn't super great but the clip of the Dimension I heard was pretty bad. The other bass- the USA one that resembles a 1st gen P-- for about two days when it came out someone on here posted the one they bought. That was it for evermore on that bass. So from there on out I've hardly seen or heard hide nor hair on here of said basses. What does this tell me? There's no rukus or hubbub. No glittering comments. No mention. etc etc. The same kind of thing comes to my mind with the Cabriollenticabah bass? What is Cabbagerollanita anyway?
:?:

I have edited my scathing post.

Not sure, but I think that the 51 Style guard instrument you are thinking of just might be the 60th Anniversary model and that model is over. It doesn't have a P/J setup but it does have the pickguard you described. It is a lot like a Custom Shop instrument.

Alto music, via AMAZON has ONE left. That is the only one I can find brand new at the moment but there might be some in individual stores that aren't online.

Schecter makes an instrument that looks a lot like the Fender 60th Anniv P-Bass called the Model T which is a P/J. That might be the origin of your P/J mental imprint.

I've not touched a Dimension yet.

Okay the 60th is the one I was talking about. So if the prod run is over it makes sense that it doesn't get a lot of talk.
I looked in the "all other Fender basses" and saw some action with the Dimensions.

I have to admit, that while I am not a P/J fan particularly, adding a jpup to and old plank style precision would be an interesting short run option for Fender. Looks kind of cool.

(As an aside, I wonder how long a body you would have to have to have jazz and precision combined, as in the Stu Hamm pieces, but with properly spaced pups, passive, two position switch - j/p, period.)

There were lots of Telecaster Basses that got modded with a Jazz pickup at the bridge and a 3rd pot added. I used to see them around a lot. It seemed a common mod. Wired it like a Jazz and it killed the single coil hum.

I did get to play a couple of Dimension basses - one was the American Deluxe IV, the other was the Modern Player version, both with just the single pickup. The USA one wasn't bad, but just kind of meh. It was very light. I remember the neck and maple fingerboard being unfinished, which isn't really my bag. And I just wasn't impressed with the sound - again, not bad, but nothing special either. Of course, this was in a music store at pretty low volume. Seems like it's trying to be a Fender version of the Stingray, which is a bass that I have almost zero experience with and isn't a bass that I have been interested in since college.

The Modern Player was much much heavier, felt a little clunkier.

I don't want to just badmouth these basses - people should play them and see how they sound and feel for themselves if at all possible. But personally I would go for a P, J or PJ before one of these.

A couple buddies of mine own the 60th anniversary and they are besides themselves over this bass. They both said they would never sell that bass. I have personally never played it.

While checking out a practice amp in Guitar Center a few months ago I grabbed a bass closest to me in the store and it happened to be a Dimension bass.. I have to admit I was very impressed. Liked the neck and really liked the sound. I wound up buying the amp/cabinet I was looking for and have never forgot how good that Dimension sounded.

I have not picked one up since (please, I have near 10 Fender Jazz/Precisions and don't want the temptation!) but I have to say it was alright. Your mileage may vary :)

From the FenderVision videos it is much better than any Stingray or G&L in every way. 8)

There are some pretty good G&L's out there, with P/J setups.

I also got to play the American Dimension IV about a month ago,.... I kinda had the same reaction that you did,.... They're nice basses & they also remind me of the Stingray,...& like yourself I also don't want to bad Mouth this bass because I want the Dimension to be a winner for Fender,..... I just wasn't blown away ,....maybe I had high expectations,.... :( & talking about P/J Basses I also got to try the new Hot Rod 70's Jazz Bass in Candy Apple Red on the same day,...... Now that Bass kickedass :)
the combination of a '74 Jazz single coil at the bridge & a '63 split coil in the neck position with Fender's new version of the Badass II ....just kicks,...... I also don't mind the U shape neck,...... I thought I would before I got to play one as I'm a fan of the C shape neck but.... I don't mind the U at all.
