I played my Roadworn Precision in "Gig Hell" the last two nights. If there ever was a "Gig Hell" it would be where I was Fri and Sat night. Total dump bar. The carpet is flat black. It used to be red. Smoking is banned here in the city and everyone was smoking. The inside of my case smells like smoke. What's up with that ? The bar looks like it hasn't changed in 40 years. There's only so much parking and everyone pulls in the lot and blocks everyone in. So we're on the mic asking for this or that car to be moved---5 times !! Everyone is drunk except me and the drummer. 5 sets on my feet from 9 till 2 for two nights. Skanks all over- Bad Pizza....... My ears are ringing ...what?.....into bed at 4 AM. both nights .... I'm fried. :|

You ever had any really good gigs like that?

I feel for you. I can relate 'cause I've played too many gigs like that. Not all gigs can be that dream gig. Seems like you have to do some like this every now and then. After one of these, I always feel lucky getting home safe and all my gear still in good working order.
On the flip side....sometimes these places have a hard time getting a "good" band and the people can be really friendly and appreciative.

grho50,

Your glass is never half full, your glass is always overflowing. An admirable quality that I really can't relate to.

As far as gigs gone bad. the worst ones were outdoors and really bad storms rolled in. We always carried rolls of plastic so we could cover up the gear. Last time, the headcases didn't care abot the storm and we kept on with big sheets of plastic over our heads and six people holding plasic over the drummer.

Man, I haven't thought about that in years! :D :D :D

I didn't play any gigs like that. But I Roadied more than my share of the Gigs from the above mentioned. It was bad enough setting up, and tearing down, but guarding the gear on breaks, and the whole time from arrival to departure. The arenas, and convention centers wern't bad, stage security etc.
But the smaller ones like you mentioned, ……… you were on your own. Image

It's seems easy to see and point out the bad things. Not sure why that is, but if you look hard enough you can see the good in most people and most things. Nothing is 100%.

Years ago we also played a gig where we were rained on. The gig was a night street dance, but also a couple of hours in the morning from 10 til noon. That was when the rain hit us. We packed everything up, took it back to the studio, took it all apart and dried it with towels and hair dryers, put everything back together and set it all back up for the dance that night. We were all pretty tired by the time we made it home that night.

I think you have an admirable quality, however I can't relate to it. Maybe it's the fact that I've spent a lifetime in QA, where I look at the whole then see the part that isn't quite right. It may be hard to grasp the concept but it is the best way to evaluate. As far as people, I'm reluctant to admit that I have a lot of faith in most. There are a few that amaze me. No matter what, they always maintain their attitude and always stay on an even keel in all they do.

i''m not a people hater but, the older I get, the more I like my cats.

Most groups won't play at the club I was talking about. The thing is that the pay is good but if I were to point out a positive I'd say even though the guys get drunk I like them and I feel like they've got my back- ya' know? They treat me good. They're all younger than me.

That's what makes it all worth it.....the guys you play with. We have a lot of fun together, so as long as the pay is pretty much the same where we play doesn't matter that much.
Actually around here the clubs that hire bands aren't that plentiful. So we do travel some in order to play some of the better clubs, but that cuts into the profit line since most of the clubs pay the same.
I'm not going to say that we don't have a drink or two, but it's rare that any of us ever have much more than that. If one of us does happen to drink a little too much, the rest of us take care of him.
That's only happened a couple of times. Once was when the female bar owner had a crush on or front man. She kept sending him up shots and he drank a few too many. We had some fun with him that night....

Been there- we had a Female front person and she fell down a couple times. It didn't matter much to anyone-- it was one of those Gig Hell jobs. No one saw her anyway cause there was too much smoke in the air. :D

After about 10 years of smoke free gigs my band has started playing at a cigar bar that pays better than most clubs.

It is actually the second floor to a very nice restaurant in Virginia.

The downside is putting up with cigar smoke and the place also features 200+ diff. kinds of whiskey.

I come home reaking of smoke.

My wife says take off your clothes in the garage!LOL

But the place is very appreciative and we tend to get some good tips!

That's what I did both nights. Our laundry room is right inside by the door to the garage. I threw all my clothes in the basket right when I came in. I had a Tshirt and camos (jeans) to slip on already waiting in there. It was cold. :D
