Can I get some thoughts on this bass? What music would you consider to be suited best for and why?

This bass can be suitable for funky slap if you tweak the EQ settings.

The American Deluxe Precision Bass is an extremely versatile bass, it's got a P/J pickup setup, it can be played in active or passive mode & has a very nice neck,....you can play what ever you want with this bass as it would cut it.

Ok, you can play slap . funk - it is a versatile bass.

I guess what I would question is whether the P-Bass is the best for this style. A P-Bass leads in many other styles.

I get what you're saying, but the addition of a J-pickup at the bridge (plus the active EQ) really takes this beyond traditional P territory. Even at that, a regular P-Bass is versatile enough that it would be at home in any musical setting including slap.

The Am DLX P-Basses are amazing basses - so so glad I bought one.

I spent 2 hrs in a bass shop not long ago and tried everything from Warwicks to MMs to Sandbergs to Sadowskis to Ibanez to Fenders to other things I can't remember. For what I play (blues, rock & hard rock) the Fender sounded best and felt best - it was clear.

Having said this, if I were targeting more modern funk music, I would prefer something else, though this is about the only area where I think the Am Dlx P-Bass is not a winner comparatively - it will still do it though the sound is not as suitable with thinner fretboard and more cumbersome.

I think the Am Dlx is the closest to the right funk sound of any of the P-Basses.

Having been through a large range of basses, one of the most disappointing things about the Am Dlx (yes, a minor thing) is the range of colours - as boring as shite! You are never going to stand out on stage playing an Am Dlx.
I love my A

The older Deluxes had a massive humbucker in the bridge and were available in 4 and 5-string versions.

Unfortunately the current Deluxe is offered only with 4 strings.
