Wanting to possibly trade my MIA p-bass into my local music store for credit towards a jazz bass or a five stringer. Any good guess on how much this is worth? http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/msg/4204891809.html

They made a sweet sunburst 50th Anniversary PBass in 2001, but it is recognizable by gold hardware and commemorative neck plate, so I am going to assume this is an American Series Precision Bass.

Book value for the bass in excellent condition w/original case is $700-$875. In the southern US you would be fortunate to get $700-$750.

Trade in value is tricky, as it depends on the bass you are moving too. If it is a used bass, it will depend on how much the dealer has on top of cost. He might give you a high in store credit if you are going to buy a high margin bass. If you are looking at a new bass, expect around 70% of value for your trade in.

Most dealers want to pay half of what the bass is worth( if that). It's an 01 so it's 13 years old. Not old enough to be worth a lot . Around here in Ohio they don't give you much on trade ins . If you can sell it on Craigslist for 1000 you'd be getting tip top dollar. If you tried to sell it for 650 it may go pretty quick. Take it to a store around here I think you'd be doing good at 450. Don't hate that's just how it is down here.
It's hard not to be humiliated when you take your 1000 guitar to a shop and they only want to give you nothing for it. I wish I could give better news but I think all the stories you'll hear are pretty much the same.

I'm in Ohio near a large university with 60,000 students. There are guitars and basses everywhere. And that doesn't include the 300 bands in town and the other 2 million people around. In a place like that it's hard to get alot for your axe- UNLESS you have something that is real desierable- then the story changes a little.

Looks like a sale or trade you will later regret.

That's a super nice Precision. That's also a lesser seen finish.

I looked at the pic again. I personally wood keep it. I bet someone might trade you a Geddy for it. If I still had my Geddy I would trade you in a heartbeat.

You will always get screwed in a trade in with a music store. I learned that many years ago. If you are going to deal with a music store, the best bet (if they still do this, I don't know it's been years) is to put it on consignment through them. At least that way you'll get more money for it. But of course, the best bet is to try and sell it yourself.

The locally owned neighborhood stores will sometime take a consignment item. But they will also take a percentage of the sale.

Ever think about selling it at one of your gigs?

Wow that is a good idea. You could put it on the stand at break time and lean a for sale sign on it ! Nice ! :D

IMHO they are always worth more to a player than the $ value, so I don't like to trade-in good Fender basses on other good Fenders. I would rec. to keep the Precision and just find the money for the new bass if you can. I consider some basses to be lifetime investments and a good USA Precision is definitely one.

Otherwise-if you sell or trade- you take too much of a loss until that bass gets some more years on it. They will go up in value as they age 20+ years or so.

If you want to modify it, try to restrict that to mods that are reversible and keep all of the original Fender parts. Don't leave that original pickup with some repair shop after you get the hankerin' for a Dimarzio or a SD basslines PU.

Good luck with your basses.
