I don't remember if I ever tried the half wound strings (if I did it was at least 20 years ago,) but I think I did try the GHS "Bright Flats." I couldn't really tell you if they did anything for me or not. There was one point I'd try out everything kind of string out there I could. I'm pretty sure they still make these, but you remember those Dean Markley Blue Steel strings that were supposed to be cryogenic, or something. I tried those when they came out. I thing it was in 1989 or 1990. That was a big thing around then. Here's a quintessential bass rig for you from 1989: A Spector bass strung with Dean Markley Blue Steel's plugged into A Galien Krueger 800 RB head and Hartke 4x10 cab with aluminum speakers. I don't think you can get anymore 1989 then that other than playing "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles with that rig. :P Maybe some acid-washed jeans? :P
