Rotosound flats, especially after they've been on for a month or so. I feel that they need to break in because when you first put them on, it's like you're playing bicycle handle bars. :P I like the thump of them and the lack of excess string noise is nice, too. They just feel like bass, if that makes any sense. If I were to go back and use rounds at any point, it would be Rotosound, also. I just love the tonality of them.

I use both and happily so. I do, however, prefer flats over rounds in the long term. I just like the sound and feel that they give a P-Bass and heck, I've used flats for some rocking tunes over the last 3 or so years. They just work.

Rounds on the other hand, I use them when I have to. Depends on the majority of the type of songs in the set. I just learn to adapt for the most part.

I prefer Roto Sound Rounds on my fretted J and Ps and flats on my fretless Jazz.

I use GHS Boomers- round wound strings on most of my basses.

I have flatwound strings on a Mustang Bass and on a Squire 54 Precision reissue, but I don't gig with them. Flats give me blisters on me fingers!

I NEVER use Nylons- they are hideous strings which always break windings at the most inopportune time.

That's just my 2 cents.

For fretted bass I love roundwounds, they get me the sound I hear in my head.
As for fretless, flatwounds are supposed to treat the fingerboard better, and they work well that way.

Although I find flatwounds lose their sound more quickly--at least in my experience that's been the case.
Maybe yours differs.

Recently I put round Roto's on my fretless Jazz, so far they haven't sawed the neck off, sound great and feel marvelous.

GHS Rounds on the rest, always happy with them. IMO they hold up longer than the Roto's. Super Slinky's have served well too. I buy when they're on sale so I have a few different types on my radar.

Tried some nylon's, played them until they died, sounded good, probably won't use them again.

Had flats on too, over the years, I've used them but they just don't do it for me. Give me rounds. As far as how long they lasted, darn things wouldn't die.

The majority of the time for me, it's roundwounds. But flatwound have their place, too. It's really more of a case of picking the right string for the right job, and knowing which string will work with a particular instrument well to achieve a particular tone.

Just to elaborate a bit more...

For a P-Bass? Flats are likely to be my first option. Usually D'Addario Chromes. That's what I had on my American Std P-5 when I sold that. And I'm probably going to put Chromes on my new project P-Bass. I've tried the LaBella Jamerson flats set on my old Classic 50's Precision, but didn't like the amount of tension they put on the neck.

On my Jack Casady Hollowbody, I've got LaBella nylon wrapped strings. They've got some nice thump, but they also respond really well to some palm muted picking.

With my Fender Roscoe Beck 5, Road Worn Jazz and the project American Standard Jazz 5 string that I'm working on? Those get round wounds. Usually, those are either Dean Markley Blue Steels, DR High Beams or DR Lo-Riders.

And with my Musicman Stingray fretless 5 string? That actually still has the stock Ernie Ball strings. But when I do change those, I'm probably going to look at some GHS pressure wounds, or possibly even some TI Jazz flats.

I really prefer the bright punchy sound of round-wounds.

I've used Ernie Ball flats on my Precision for a while now and the tone is amazing!
Thick, full, round. Sounds like a bass! :-)
Doesn't interfere with the guitars as much. Has its own little sonic space. I love flats!

Anyone ever use those half-wounds (I think they were called.) I guess they were something to the effect of a combination of both flat and round.

Yeah! D'Addario came up with that idea sometime in the mid-1980's (IIRC). Half Rounds promised the best of both worlds: the full range tonality of a round with the easy screech-free playability of a flat. Pfffft! I have never been so completely disappointed in a string set since I tried a set of nylon tapewound Fenders in 1974. I'll never buy either one ever again.

But somebody's buying them because they keep making the damned things. GHS has a version they simply call "Bright Flats". These have something of a good reputation.

GHS also has another interesting mutation in their "Pressurewound" putting round wrap wire through a set of rollers to reform it into an oval shape. That's all I know as I have zero experience with them.
