I've had a couple fretless basses. I played one with rounds constantly for about 3 years..and only developed tiny indentions in the rosewood. Putting that goop on your fingerboard doesn't do as much for preservation as people think.

I Agree Jaco did abuse his Bass of Doom,... he also used steel rounds because that's all that was available back then,.......I've read that Jaco practiced with his fretted jazz bass
& used his fretless for gigs..... I also agree many bassists wouldn't put that much wear & tear on their fretless basses... :)

Rotosounds and only a very few others back in the 70's. They were expensive too! That's why we started boiling strings. They were $40 up here back then ! That's at least $80 in todays dollars. Maybe more. :D

You should use coated roundwounds on your fretless basses. Much kinder to your fingerboards (and your fingers too), and almost no roundwound string screech when you slide around. They last at least twice as long too. If the wild colors of DR Neons are just not your style, there are clear coated Dragon Skins and also the Elixir brand (the original coated string).

I agree about taking a bit more care, or caution with fretless boards.

When I decided to go ahead & put Rounds on my Fretless I also considered trying DR Clear coats or Elixir's that have the nano webbing clear coat,....I decided to go with Nickel plated steel Rotosound RB 45 rounds,....I heard a lot of people being satisfied with nickel plated rounds on their Fretless basses & these were already strings that I use,....though I'm still curious to try the DR Clear Coats, (I believe they're called Dragon Skins) or the Elixir's ......the Elixir's are $$$ but are supposed to last twice as long..
