Totally off topic, but how about opening the case on a new bass where the finish is still curing. Now there is a smell to fall in love with.

I stand corrected and add to the list!

I knew you'd like it, being Rotosound's spokesman. Once your new band hits it big, they'll be sending you boxes and boxes of them.

They look, feel and sound great! Wish you could play it too. Come down Thursday for dinner, or at least dessert.

I've heard all the negatives about putting them on, but I really don't think they'll destroy the fretboard or my nads for that matter.

I suggest we take our Rotos to Breakfast for dinner and have our dessert before the breakfast dinner. Hey it's different you know? Specially if I drive all that way it has to be a killer meal. What do you think? Maybe? It's okay if we don't do it like that.

I'd love to play rotos on a fretless- there is a bass at the store that has had the frets pulled out and it's not in great shape. It has Mr Nylons on it.It's just slots with no filler. Some mental thing came over me because there were slots. Just cuts. I picked it up and played on it like it was exact. It was odd . The bass is just like some basses I've fixed up (that need it). I may buy it. It can't be more than 100 or so. It's a well known brand. I guess I could feel the slots? Maybe? It seemed as easy as playing a fretted.

I put a set of Rotosound Nickel Plated RB 45's (45-65-85-105) on my Jaco fretless a few months ago & so far so good,.......they sound great, & being that they're nickel wound plated steel they're very forgiving to the Fret Board,....... My fret board is Pao Ferro'...
Brazilian's refer to it as Iron Wood.

Over the long weekend I'm going to put DR Legends flatwounds (.045-.100) on my Duck Dunn - interested to see what kind of tension they have. Was going to do it tonight but don't have any plans for Thanksgiving so thought I would save the project until then. Hopefully won't need to make too many adjustments action & intonation-wise!

They didn't want to go! It was very cold the past few days and they wanted to sit in the gameroom and watch Dirty Harry movies. When I questioned them on this, they said they were looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner.

Oh, it will be a killer meal. Wifey is an excellent cook and turkey is a specialty! There will be lot and lots of other scrumptous delicacies too. Then there's dessert!

As far as how they play, they're marvelous! Bebe has the best neck ever played (well worth the trip just to play her, and the Roto's sound, feel and play great) and even the cats are excited that you might come.

I think the issue of strings destroying fretboards is greatly exaggerated.

I totally agree ,....... & the sales Guy in the Bass Department at Long & McQuade agree's with me to,... though when I contacted Fender customer relations a year ago to
inquire about why Fender chose to put Flats on the the Jaco Fretless as opposed to Nickel round wounds & being the the fretboard is Pau Ferro ( which is a little stronger than Rosewood) & there seems to be a thick enough poly varnish coating on the fretboard.
Fender's reply to me was Quote......."well we never tested it with rounds so we can't confirm if it would be a good option,...what you should do is check out the many Bass blogs on the web & see how the round wound option has worked out for other bassists,End Quote. I was floored by this comment considering that Fender's American Standard Fretless with rosewood Fretboard( a little softer than Pao Ferro) comes with a set of Fender nickel plated steel rounds,.......So I just went for it & have had no regrets even though I've heard stories of guys who have had issues with the poly flaking of the edges of their fretboard......I haven't experienced this yet & I have to wonder how hard these guys are playing their fretless basses to be experiencing the poly coating to flake off. :) In my opinion if you stick to Nickel rounds or Half rounds you should have an issue if any for quite a while.
I do wonder why Fender didn't use Petit's Marine epoxy on the artist model..& only chose to use it (or some version of it) on the Custom Shop Jaco Fretless (that comes with Nickel plated rounds) & from what I understand & from what I've been able to read regarding this topic... there isn't that much difference between the two epoxy's (Poly Varnish & Marine Epoxy) though some would propably beg to differ with me.

Hi Linn,

We’d love to help you out but an all purple set has not been released from us yet. Perhaps in the new year.

Thanks for asking us though,

The DR Staff

James,

Fender's reply was ludicrous! How in the world could they say say something so dumb? For all you Fender employees who may be reading this, unless you made the call on this, i wasn't talking about you.

As to aggressive playing, what do people DO to their instruments? I've had my basses for a long time, and the all look like they did when they came home with me. Oh well.

Linn,

There is a reason they don't make a purple set, it will make you crazy!

You have no idea how disappointed I was to get this reply from Fender,......it's obvious the person replying to my query had no idea & was playing it safe.....
I'm like you Oxfan I've had a lot of basses come & go,... some were with me for a long time & when I sold them I got top dollar for them because even though they were well played they were also well cared for ........ I guess it comes down to the fact that I've worked hard for all that I own & I respect what I own & what I've worked for.

Rounds will wear a fretless board down. Jaco put the Marine varnish on his to keep the wear down. (play on words)- but consider Jaco- the guy played every day hard and fast all the time in Florida near the beach and he used to carry his bass around up and down the street with no case in the salt Florida air with swet from his huge hands and dirt and grime. So it was a good idea for him to put on the varnish. I don't think many bass players would put that kind of wear and tear on their fretless.
