Thanks for starting this one. It has been discussed before, but only in segments.

While the original Fender pickups in both American and MIM Precisions get the job done fairly well, there are many aftermarket pickup options that can custom tailor a Precision Bass to the needs of the owner. In my case, I play deep, mellow, low for our style of music. The DiMarzio "railroad track" DP127 split P set gives me the ultra low frequency response that I need, especially when tuned BEAD using GHS Precision Flat's. The output of the DP127's is rated at 250 millivolts and gives the owner more amp flexibility than some pickups with only 160 mv output.

Stroker Vance will probably agree with me on these points. We have both tested many brands of split P pickups and have gone with the DiMarzio's for our needs. The DP127 set also enhances the highs a bit, so those persons who are not satisfied with stock pickup frequency range may be pleasantly surprised.

I do agree. Today is the day I installed a Dimarzio DP 127 Rails Precision pickup in my 1974 P bass. Dimarzios have served me well since 1979. Although I have tried other brands I am always drawn back to Dimarzio for their excellent sound . The Model P Dimarzio is an excellent choice too, and so are their Model J pickups for Jazz basses by Fender.. I find the combination of Rotosound round wound bass strings combined with Dimarzio pickups in a Fender bass to be the the sound I compare everything else to. Go Fender and go Dimarzio and Rotosound= A team to be reckoned with in modern music all over the World. **I am not a paid spokesman for any of the above brands .

I guess I should say that I don't habitually take Fender pickups out of a Fender bass and replace them. Nope. I have and have had Fender basses that do not need a pickup swap at all . They never get touched. Some of the older ones and newer ones need a little help sometimes. Sometimes a pickup swap does not help. Then They have to go.

Fender Original Precision Bass Pickup.

A very BRIGHT sounding P-Bass pickup. Nearly as full range as the first generation single coils when deployed with a 0.05uf cap. Yet still has a full P-Bass bottom. Totally unique.

Hey Brother Dave, don't you have a P with Lindy Fralin's?

I DID have a Lindy Fralin stock wind in a split coil 2nd generation modern P-Bass for gigging. Now has a Fender Original P-Bass in it. I've put the Fender Original in 2 modern mass production instruments so far. That particular Fender is the fullest range split coil P-Bass pickup I've ever found.

The Fralin 2nd generation P-Bass sounds bass heavy in comparison, which you'd expect it to do. If ever ordering another Fralin 2nd Gen pickup I'd go 2% underwound next time, but doubtful I will need one as long as I can get the Fender Original P-Bass.

Still using a Lindy Fralin split wound first generation P-Bass pickup here. Dang good pickup for gigging a first generation P-Basses since it is totally noiseless, but otherwise doesn't sound much like a first-generation P-Bass pickup at all. The split wound first-gen pickups as a rule lack the first-generation sparkly crisp tone that only lives in a single coil pickup. However if a true single coil gets noisy in a certain setup, it is good to have one of the Fralin split wounds on standby because it excels at RFI rejection. It makes a first-gen P-Bass usable in even the noisiest environs but there is a tonal tradeoff of upper mids for noise rejection. To me NOTHING sounds better than a true single coil in a first generation P-Bass. Nothing. That exclusive tone is why that design has endured 62 years. However in some situations it can be noisy and there is no alternative but a split coil.

I have a '54 RI and the owner before me put a Lindy Fralin in it. Not sure what model (if he makes more than one) but it sounds amazing and the low end is so much more pronounced and crisp than with my stock '65 split pickups.
