There seems to be endless fascination with pick-up choice for the Fender Precision Electric Bass Guitar. Indeed there are more pick-ups to choose from for the Precision split p'up than any other type. Therefore it is only fitting that there be a good; right, and proper thread on this driving force.

A poll may be an idea for this issue. I prefer the CS60's on the Am. Std. If I were to change-out, my first choice would be the SDP-3. Or a second choice for change-out would be the Alnico 5's.

Good idea! For my two cents worth, I think the Fenders are the best bet. Having swapped out some under powered pups on my FSR Precision for SPB-3's, I have to say, they sound pretty good. For a more aggressive sound, they definitely are the way to go.

Seymour Duncan is the best known of all the custom 'after-market' pick-up manufacturers. They make no less than 7 different split P-bass p'ups. http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass/pbass/passive/index.php?page=all Some of which are now Fender factory stock p'ups in various signature Precisions.

This makes for some rather easy direct compairisons. Both the Roger Waters and Nate Mendel have SD Quarter-Pounders. The Steve Harris has the SD SPB-1 which is described as a vintage correct pickup that is "A faithful reproduction of Leo Fender's 1957 dual coil pickup design".

And if you have a Fender dealer that has these basses in stock (and if you're right-handed) it is very easy to make accurate direct compairisons.

Thanks for starting this one. It has been discussed before, but only in segments.

While the original Fender pickups in both American and MIM Precisions get the job done fairly well, there are many aftermarket pickup options that can custom tailor a Precision Bass to the needs of the owner. In my case, I play deep, mellow, low for our style of music. The DiMarzio "railroad track" DP127 split P set gives me the ultra low frequency response that I need, especially when tuned BEAD using GHS Precision Flat's. The output of the DP127's is rated at 250 millivolts and gives the owner more amp flexibility than some pickups with only 160 mv output.

Stroker Vance will probably agree with me on these points. We have both tested many brands of split P pickups and have gone with the DiMarzio's for our needs. The DP127 set also enhances the highs a bit, so those persons who are not satisfied with stock pickup frequency range may be pleasantly surprised.

I had the Roger Waters PBass with SDP-3, and I thought it sounded magnificent. One of the finest Fender MIM Basses.

I count 14 (15 if you include the single Am. Std. lefty) different single split p'up passive Precisions.

:!:  14!

You can very easily make accurate direct compairisons with Fender's own P-bass pickup variations.

American Standard (Custom Shop) vs '63 AVRI vs '58 AVRI vs Mike Dirnt (Custom Vintage '59 Split Single-Coil)

Go right ahead and toss in the Made-In-Mexico Standard Precision too and see just how well the least expensive Fender P sounds against the much more expensive models.

Exactly so, Paducah Luke! Just like the Tone Cap thread. That information was all over the place before.

As you well know I also have a love for DiMarzio's Split P's

I would positively Love to have a lefty 2013 American Standard Precision with the Custom Shop p'ups and the high mass bridge. I wouldn't change a thing as it is absolutely perfect as is.
