Hi everyone! :D

I'm afraid the 2001 Deluxe P I'm going to buy is fake. The owner says it's been refinished (he doesn't know how, when & why: the refinish had been done before him). I can't expect it myself, 'cause it's about 1k miles away from me :help:
I've written to the fender support, they answered, what this should be black alder body with tortoise pickguard and maple neck.
Is it okay, what the stamps and writings on the neck heel and neck pocket are different?
Coukd someone tell me is it fake or original? Thank you :D

Now, there's an evaluation for Brotherdave if I ever saw one...

The serial number is year 2000 from the Corona Plant. However, unless the camera was creating a linear issue, the 5's in the serial number are not exactly level with the numbers to the left.

Also, I'm trying to visualize why there three are extra screw holes near the tuner on the back of the headstock. That's something that I haven't run across before.

Hey, Brotherdave... take a look at this one !!!

PaducahLuke, it look like the extra holes are from d-tuner. number 2 in the serial number looks a bit lower to me, though all of the fives are straight

I have purchased basses online before, but only from reputable online stores (Sweetwater, Sam Ash) and never from an individual.
I've only had to return one bass (without too much hassel) and maybe I'm just lucky, but the basses I've ended up with are great basses. Just needed a little fine tuning with the set ups.
There isn't a shortage of basses being sold online at a good price. If something doesn't feel right to you....walk away and keep looking. Find the deal you feel comfortable with.

Not a fake. A 2000 model. Everything there but the pickguard looks correct. They used aged white or tortoise on these. The sticker residue even looks right but the bar code stickers are gone. This one is not very desirable to me because it looks rode hard and put up wet. The original finishes were spectacular transparent finishes and would rather have one in the original finish that shows off the the grain of the select ash body. The wear on the hardware, especially the knobs is very worrisome here. I don't see anything else out of character parts wise. Yes someone put a Hipshot or similar D-Tuner on it and then removed it replacing the original tuner. That isn't the most bothersome problem I have with this particular example. Why it was refinished, why the bar code stickers were removed and why the hardware (the knobs particularly) are over-worn to be just 13 years old are bigger concerns. I don't know what it endured, but I suspect a lot of use and neglect if not outright abuse or even possibly some sort of water damage. On this particular one, I'd personally pass. There are far better examples of this model around. It looks more than twice it's age.

Yeah the first thing I thought when I saw the knobs was water damage or salt water damage.

  I wonder if this is the result of a disasterous attempt to 'self relic' the original finish :?:

One just never knows- I'm thinking maybe it got water damage or in some kind of storm or maybe a parts gweetar. The rust on the saddle screws and in the bridge area-- that kind of rust is etching acid ( bad try at relic) MAYBE but it reminds me of Florida salt air rust too. OR it just got used by someone who doesn't take care of it. I'd pay like 400$ for it if it sounded good. I'd strip it completely apart and do it up right. Make it purr hopefully. Geez it can't be worth much more than that! It's a bad refin and it has holes and junk. I like the inlays. :)

I thought for sure you experts would have dubbed this one a fake. The logo just looks "off" to me, but I am certainly no expert.

I had a Deluxe (98) like that one only it was beutimuss. The logo on the 98 was the first year for an "applique" chrome lettering style. It looks like that is what this one has but you can't really see the reflection of a flash from the camera if there was a flash. The Fender script is chrome.

As far as the black refin- I've heard where some churches only want black guitars in the bands. Maybe this could be that? With the great finishing Fender did on these it would be hard to think anyone would change the color unless they just had to or if there was damage or if it was pea green.
